From Your Pastor’s Heart

December 20, 2015

When the angel told Mary “with God all things are possible,” he was speaking of much more than the miraculous virgin birth of Jesus. With the birth of Jesus Christ several seemingly incompatible circumstances occurred simultaneously which could never be arranged by human effort. The promised Messiah of the Old Testament was declared to be eternal, “whose goings forth have are from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2). However, the eternal Messiah was brought into the world in a fixed moment in time by which the rest of history is designated. The Son of God is declared to be ever-present throughout all the universe as David asks the question “where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7). However, the omnipresent Son of God was wrapped in a tiny bundle of swaddling clothes…in an infant’s diaper. Jesus rightfully proclaimed, “all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18). Yet the omnipotent Messiah broke into human history as a helpless infant who could not hold His head up from the manger’s straw. The Messiah is identified as one who knows even the deepest mysteries and man’s innermost thoughts (Deuteronomy 29:29, Psalm 139:14). However, the omniscience of the eternal maker of the universe was confined in the body of an infant who could not yet utter a word. It is little wonder that the Apostle Paul came to the unmistakable conclusion, “without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh” (1 Timothy 3:16). I am glad to be your pastor!
