From Your Pastor’s Heart

In the book of Job, God extends an invitation for man to explore the sciences, especially the study of nature and geology. The open minded study of these disciplines will lead to the conclusion that “The hand of the Lord has done this, in whose hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind” (Job 12:7-10). Unfortunately, due to the misguided efforts of some scientists to use their expertise in an attempt to deny the existence of God, many believers feel that science is in direct opposition to the Bible. However, the more scientists discover about the complexity of the earth and its creatures, the more these facts point to the deliberate actions of a Creator rather than the haphazard results of a chance accident. Andrew McIntosh is a fully credentialed scientist who earned two doctorates in combustion theory as well as in mathematics. He is an accomplished scholar who has published over 80 research papers and contributed chapters to 10 textbooks dealing with combustion theory. He is also an avid researcher in the scientific evidence in the existence and active work of God in creation. He presents a fascinating review of the monarch butterfly as an example of God’s design in creation. Monarch butterflies migrate over 2,000 miles from northern California to their wintering grounds in central Mexico. However, none of them make the entire journey. Some of the adults that make the journey back are fully mature, so that some females lay eggs and die somewhere en route northward. Their offspring, after going through the caterpillar/chrysalis stage continue the migration northward. More remarkable still is the fact that this migration will involve 3-4 generations. Somehow, each generation “knows” at what stage of the migrating cycle the group of butterflies is in as soon as it takes flight. The information of when to fly and in which direction is passed down to each generation. Furthermore, the group always returns to exactly the same wintering spot every year. The bodies of the monarch butterflies contain the magnetic mineral magnetite, which enables them to orient themselves by sensing the earth’s magnetic field. Furthermore, their complex eyes are made of 6,000 separate lenses which are sensitive to the polarized light of the sun. All of this gives them a direction cue. A haphazard evolutionary development does not explain these facts. This system had to be in place fully developed from the very start for the monarch butterfly to ever survive. McIntosh also asserts that there are no half-formed butterflies in the fossil record. They are all similar to the modern ones—fully developed and ready to go! I am glad I am your pastor!
