Objective: Today, I will solve “More” versions of comparing word problems

involving smaller unknowns.

Compare Smaller Unknown – “More” version word problems:

1. Listen carefully to the numbers in the word problem.

There are 3 more boys than girls. There are 9 boys. How many girls are there?

2. Use the numbers to write an equation using a symbol or letter to represent the unknown.

3. Solve for the unknown.

Unknown Solve for the unknown:

9—3=6 V=6 This problem can also be solved as a missing addend problem.

V+3=9 V=6
