4. Answers will vary. Any pair of addends that sums to 9 is 4.

1 + 4 + 3 = ;  = 8

correct.

MC & MP Check 

Are students able to collaborate in a small group?

Does the students work show an understanding of addition?

Are students able to articulate the process they used to solve each task?

Are students able to articulate what they would do differently to solve the problem? (Error Analysis)

Grade 1 Unit 4 Lesson 19 T TE

Verbal Instruction *MP1: Make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it! *MP8: Find a strategy to help solve the problem.

Listen to the word problem. Make a drawing and write an equation to represent the sum. Section 1: 

In a nest there are some blue birds and 3 black birds. In all there are 9 birds. How many blue birds are in the nest?

Section 2: 

Jesse has 3 soccer balls, 7 tennis balls, and 5 baseballs. How many balls does he have all together?

Section 3: 

There are 8 pink erasers and some gray erasers. In all there are 11 erasers. How many erasers are gray?

Section 4: 

Megan picked 9 flowers. Some were white and some were purple. How many flowers could be white? How many flowers could be purple?

Group Presentation *MP3: Do you agree/disagree with what

said?

*MP6: How do you know your answers are correct/reasonable?

Sample Probing Questions: 

Share how you completed each task.

What approach did you use when solving this problem?

In your own words, tell us what addition means.

In your opinion, which of the problems was the hardest?

Reflective Closure 

Were we able to work together as a group?

Were most groups able to complete the tasks?

Were we able to verbalize our mathematical content and practice?
