First Addend Missing:

Missing addends can be represented by any letter or symbol.

In the basket, there are some apples and 5 oranges. In all, there are 8 pieces of fruit. How many apples are in the basket?

6 +  = 12

Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Listen carefully to the word problem. Record the equation with the unknown. Solve for the unknown. Record the unknown.
