Today, I will measure lengths of objects using whole length units.
Vocabulary Whole length unit: any repeated unit that is smaller than the object being measured.
The bandage is about 3 paperclips long. The paperclips are examples of whole length units because they are smaller than the bandage and are used to measure the length of the bandage.
Teacher Resources Considerations: Students can cut out the strip of paperclips provided in the student journal to complete this lesson. Or, the teacher may prefer to copy the strips of paperclips on the next page, and distribute to students for this lesson.
Steps: 1. Measure an object with whole length units (no gaps or overlaps). 2. Count how many whole length units long the object is. Application of MPs: MP5 : What tool will be used? Why?
*MP3: Do you agree/disagree with what said? *MP6: How do you know your answers are correct/reasonable?
Recap today’s lesson with one or more of the following MP questions: MP5: What tool was used? Why? MP6: How can you use math vocabulary in your explanation? MP7: What steps helped you solve the problems?
