Today, I will compose a triangle, circle, and half-circle by combining two or more different shapes.

Vocabulary Compose: To combine two or more shapes together to make another shape

Teacher Resources Considerations: Use the paper cut-outs of the plane shapes at the end of this lesson to provide manipulatives for students.

Application of MPs: Orientation: The position of a shape

Equilateral triangle: All 3 sides are equal in length

MP1:

How do drawings help you in today’s lesson?

MP4: What are some ways to make a triangle? MP7: What do you notice when you turn the shapes?

Right triangle: A triangle with one 90° angle that creates an L shape on one side

Grade 1 Unit 7 Lesson 10 C TE

/ Directions: Combine two or more plane shapes to compose another shape.

1. Compose a triangle by combining two or more different shapes. 

State the objective: Today, I will compose a triangle by combining 2 or more different shapes.

Model how to combine a trapezoid and a small equilateral triangle to compose a large equilateral triangle. Change the orientation to show that either way they are placed, they compose a triangle.

Model how to combine 2 right triangles by placing the straight sides back to back.

Model another way to compose a large equilateral triangle by combining 4 small equilateral triangles.

2. Compose a circle by combining two or more different shapes. 

State the objective: Today, I will compose a circle and half-circle by combining 2 or more different shapes.

Model how to combine 2 half circles to compose a circle. Change the orientation to show that either way they are placed they compose a circle.

Model how to combine 2 quarter circles to compose a half circle. Change the orientation to show that either way they are placed they compose a circle.

Model another way to compose a circle by combining 4 quarter circles.
