Today, I will work in a small group to show my understanding of comparing lengths.

Materials  One student recording sheet for each group.  One marker or crayon for each group.

Preparation 

In this GMT, the teacher may choose to read the problems aloud and have students record their responses on a recording sheet, or make copies of the Verbal Instruction page for 1 2 groups to use together.



If students will use a recording sheet, divide it into 4 sections. 3 Each section is numbered 1-4.

1. Jack is building a dog run for his golden retriever. He is making the run 15 feet long. He has already built 8 feet of the fence. How much more does he need to build?

2. Jack’s golden retriever loved the dog run so much he ran down the length of it 6 times. What was the total length that Jack’s dog ran?

3. Jack’s dog grew from 12 inches to 36 inches in the first year of his life. How many inches did Jack’s dog grow?

4. Jack’s dog eventually grew so much, Jack had to double the length of the dog run. How long would the dog run be if he doubled it?

3. It was 90 feet to first base. Tom was tagged out 27 feet short of first base. How many feet did Tom run?
