#27 Colgate (0-0, PL 0-0) at #10 Massachusetts (0-0, A-10 0-0) Saturday, September 2, 2006 • 1:00 McGuirk Stadium - Amherst, Mass. GAME DAY The Colgate Raiders will open their 116th gridiron season when they travel to the University of Massachusetts on Saturday, September 2. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. at McGuirk Stadium. Colgate is seeking its 11th straight winning season under head coach Dick Biddle. Last year, the Raiders were 8-4 overall and shared first place in the Patriot League with a 5-1 mark. They made their seventh appearance in the NCAA I-AA playoffs. This season the Raiders have been picked as the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League title in a vote of the league coaches and sports information directors. In openers under Biddle, Colgate has posted a 2-8 mark. In the two seasons that the Raiders won their season opener during Biddle's tenure, they finished 10-2 in 1999 and 15-1 in 2003 while reaching the I-AA championship title game. UMass is in its third season under head coach Don Brown. Last fall, the Minutemen finished 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the North Division in the Atlantic 10. They are ranked 10th in The Sports Network preseason I-AA poll. THE SERIES This is the sixth meeting between Colgate and Massachusetts with the Raiders leading the series, 4-1. Colgate has won all four of its contests on its home turf against UMass, including a 17-14 decision last season in Hamilton. The only previous game played at McGuirk Stadium resulted in a 30-20 win by the Minutemen in 2004. LAST MEETING (2005) All-America linebacker Jared Nepa had a team-high 12 tackles and one interception as the Colgate defense came away with five interceptions leading the Raiders to a 17-14 upset victory over #15 ranked Massachusetts at Andy Kerr Stadium. On the offensive side of the football, Colgate managed only 167 yards – 85 rushing and 82 passing. Sloan completed 6-of-15 passes for 82 yards, while tailback J.J. Bennett was the leading rusher with 16 carries for a career-high 48 yards, while fullback Ben Evans had 12 carries for 24 yards. Colgate held the Minutemen’s strong rushing game to 84 yards. COLGATE VS. TOP 25 TEAMS Colgate is 6-5 in its last 11 games against teams ranked in the Top 25 of Division I-AA. In 2003, they defeated #24 Lehigh, #19 Fordham, #5 Massachusetts, #10 Western Illinois, and #13 Florida Atlantic, before losing to #3 Delaware in the NCAA Division I-AA championship game. Colgate lost to #14 Massachusetts in the 2004 season opener and later to #12 Lehigh. Last year, they beat #15 UMass 17-14, lost to #16 Lehigh 50-34 and lost to #1 New Hampshire 55-21.
