HARD BOILED EGGS

Here’s how to make hard boiled eggs. Use as a snack, in appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and as an ingredient in another dish. It’s good to know these particulars: This recipe assumes that a pan with a heat resistant handle(s)* is used. More information is available in the Basic Start, Cupboards section – Nonstick Pots and Pans with Heat Resistant Handles. *Learn more about how to get water to boil on the stove top in the Basic Start, How To’s section – Boil Water. There’s more information about using a slotted spoon* in the Basic Start, Cupboards section – Slotted Spoon. ______1.

Get fresh eggs. Get pot. Get water. Get slotted spoon. Get fresh eggs, a clean pot for cooking, water from a faucet, and a clean slotted spoon.

______2.

Careful! Put eggs into pot. Using your one hand, hold the handle of the pot so that it’s steady. Using your other hand, and being very careful because the eggs can crack easily, gently put the eggs into the pot by placing them on to the bottom of the pot in a single layer. It’s best not to stack the eggs because they will crack more easily this way.

______3.

Careful! Put water into pot. Hold the pot under the faucet and fill the pot with enough water to cover the eggs by an extra one inch. It’s important to be careful because the eggs can crack easily if they roll around too much while you’re putting the water into the pot.

______4.

Put pot on to stove. Put the pot on to a stove burner.

______6.

Boil water – 10 minutes. Heat the water until it reaches a boil and keep it boiling for ten minutes.

______7.

Turn off stove. Turn off the stove burner.

______8.

Careful! Take out eggs with slotted spoon. Using your one hand, hold the handle of the pot so that it’s steady and safe. Using your other hand and the slotted spoon, carefully scoop up the eggs from the water, one by one, and put them on to a safe surface.

______9.

Crack open eggs. Hold the hard boiled eggs, one at a time, in your one hand. Gently tap the hard boiled egg on to a hard surface such as the rim of a sink, a plate, or the edge of a counter top until the shell cracks. The tapping should be gentle so you don’t smash the egg. Once the shell is cracked, use your other hand to peel away at the shell until all of the shell is off. Throw away the egg shell. Some cooks like to peel the egg shell off of a hard boiled egg while holding the egg under running cold water because they believe the shell comes off easier this way.
