LETTUCE

Here’s how to tear fresh lettuce. Use in salads and as an ingredient in another dish. Wash lettuce in step 4, not before. ______1.

Get fresh lettuce. Get strainer. Get dish towel. Get a fresh head or bunch of lettuce, a clean strainer and a clean dish towel.

______2.

Pull and tear. Using your hands, pull and tear off lettuce leaves from the head or bunch. Try to pull off the leaves as close to the stem of the lettuce so that you get most of the leaf. Do not use a knife to cut the lettuce leaves since this may cause the lettuce to discolor. If you’ve used up all the lettuce leaves, throw away the remaining core.

______3.

Bite sized pieces. To tear smaller, bite sized pieces, use your hands to continue tearing the lettuce leaves from step 2.

______4.

Wash lettuce. Using your hands and the strainer, thoroughly wash the lettuce leaves. Let the water drain from the lettuce and the strainer. It’s easier to wash lettuce once the leaves have been pulled and torn off from the head/bunch.

______5.

Tear again. Using your hands, tear off and throw away any brown or wilted pieces of lettuce.

______6.

Wrap lettuce in towel. Wrap the lettuce leaves in the dish towel to dry and, if not using immediately, to store in the refrigerator for use later that same day.
