“He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander.” - Aristotle Announcements: 1. Nomination Paperwork Procedures: The staff has established a procedure for students to have nomination and application paperwork reviewed and approved for submission. This procedure must be followed to ensure the orderly flow of paperwork and administrative actions, and to ensure that your paperwork is prepared for submission with no defects or shortcomings. The procedure involves a three step process. First, paperwork is reviewed by CAPT Vortmann or LTC Reichert. Next, Mrs. Bailey reviews the paperwork. Finally, CDR Bailey will review the paperwork and give it his final approval. Skipping any one of these steps will result in the student being sent back to step number one in the process. In accordance with Greystone policy, students are reminded that no paperwork is submitted to outside agencies without the approval of CDR Bailey. The staff will also establish a schedule for students to submit paperwork prioritized based on submission deadlines from your respective members of congress. Once published, students are directed not to schedule times for paperwork review until your specified timeframe. We must follow the established prioritized timeline to ensure that all students meet congressional deadlines for the submission of nomination requests. 2. Camp Flaming Arrow Camping Trip: We will conduct a camping trip at Camp Flaming Arrow from Friday, 1SEPT to Sunday, 3 SEPT. Flaming Arrow is a YMCA summer camp located near Hunt, Texas, approximately 20 miles west of Kerrville along the Guadalupe River. The YMCA of Greater San Antonio was kind enough to offer us the use of their facilities during this weekend and our upcoming high and low ropes course scheduled for 22 SEPT in exchange for a service project to be conducted early in the Spring semester. During the trip, the Greystone office will not be manned, and parents can reach staff members on their cell numbers if necessary, including Commander Bailey at 443-822-8918 or Lieutenant Colonel Reichert at 936-205-0568. 3. Labor Day Weekend Schedule: Following the camping trip, Greystone will observe Labor Day Weekend on Sunday and Monday (2 – 3 SEPT). There will be no Study Hall on Sunday night and no PT on Monday morning. No classes are scheduled for Schreiner University on Monday as well. A Weekend Duty Coordinator is designated for Sunday and Monday as indicated in the duty roster Page 1 of 3
above. The Main Office Watch will resume on Monday evening, as well as Study Hall. Students are encouraged to use this time to rest, do laundry, and catch up on their studies. 4. Sports Injury Prevention Presentation: Representatives from the university health and fitness center will present a class on sports injury prevention at 1630 on Tuesday, 4 September in the CACC Theater. All Greystone students without a class conflict are required to attend. The presentation will focus on the prevention and treatment of common running-related injuries, especially shin splints. Reminders: 1. Bible Study: We had a great turnout for our first Bible Study last week, with excellent and thoughtful participation by all who attended. We will continue our Bible Study series on Tuesday, 4 SEPT at 1800 in Room106 of the Moody Science Building. All interested students are invited to attend. 2. Room Inspection Patterns: Room inspection results this week were not as favorable as the previous week. By now, you all know the standards. Although not nearly as stringent as the standards for room appearance at the service academies, our standards are meant to maintain cleanliness and organization in your living areas, as well as to stress the attention to detail you will encounter at the academies. Pay attention to the simple things, such as ensuring your blinds are open and at half-mast, vacuuming rugs, keeping refrigerators and microwaves clean (inside and out), and organizing items on shelves and in closets. Further issues with inspection performance will result in weekend inspections, so tighten up. 3. Safe Driving Reminder (Repeat): The school year has started in Kerrville, so students and staff must be aware of school zones located throughout the Kerrville area. Of note, fines increase for those caught using cell phones in school zones, so all drivers must remain vigilant. Greystone students are directed to refrain from using cell phones to talk or text while driving anywhere in the Kerrville area. This is to ensure your safety, and to serve as a positive example within the community. All are encouraged to extend this practice to any area while driving.
