Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections
PA R ENTS PAGE April 6-9, 2011 How God Reveals Himself—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a teenager goes first): When it’s your turn, say: If I discovered our house was on fire while I was standing in your bedroom, the one thing I would grab from your room before running to safety would be . . . This is important to me because . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Hebrews 1:1-3 and 2 Peter 1:20-21. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these passages. Truth • God reveals Himself to humanity through His Word and His Son. Untruths • God is whatever I imagine Him to be. • Every book that claims to be holy can teach us something about God. • All world religions are actually worshipping the same God. 3. Explore Scripture: Read aloud 2 Peter 1:20-21. Tell your family that every line of the Bible was inspired by God and is the Word of God. Say: God has chosen to reveal who He is and what He is like through the Bible. He has chosen to reveal His truth and His plan for our lives through His Word. Emphasize that Scripture is not a matter of our own personal opinion or interpretation. Say: God used humans to write the Bible, but it remains His Word to us. Read aloud Hebrews 1:1-3. Say: The clearest way God has revealed Himself to us is through His Son, Jesus. Affirm that God’s Word plays a big part in helping us learn about Jesus as well. Say: Everything the Bible tells us about Him is true and can help us know Him more deeply, but we also can know Jesus better through what we experience in our relationship with Him. 4. Think It Through: The teenager will lead this step. 5. Nail It Down: Say: You have never met ____________ (call the name of a living relative your teen has never met) even though I have told you about him/her. Suppose that on our next vacation, we take you to meet him/her, and you spend a day doing things with him/her. Ask: How would that personal experience help you know him/her better than simply hearing about him/her? Discuss responses. Remind family members about Hebrews 1:1-3. Emphasize that having a personal relationship with Jesus helps us know God in a way that nothing else can. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead this prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: I bless this family for embracing God through His Word and His Son. Parent Tip: If you have selected a “life verse” for your teen, share that verse with her. Explain why this verse is special to you and why you attached it to her life. If you have not chosen a life verse yet, share that task with your teen. Allow her to offer suggestions and decide on a meaningful verse together.
