ooking back now, it’s easy to spot the moment that the University of Texas’ football program was rebooted under new coach Charlie Strong. It wasn’t in April, when he shocked boosters by stating the obvious, that no, this retooling program will not be in the national championship game this year. It wasn’t in July, when he dismissed the seventh player held over from

last year’s roster. And it sure wasn’t this month, when he took the Longhorns’ logo off the players’ helmets, an old-school coaching gimmick that has somehow taken on a life of its own. Strong hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete on Texas football on Jan. 12, the night he first met the team. “You guys just got a lot of good coaches fired,” Strong told the Longhorns assembled in the team meeting room. When I ran into Will Muschamp at SEC media days last month, the Florida head coach and former Longhorns defensive coordinator inquired as to the reception that Charlie Strong was receiving in Austin. Told that fans were getting accustomed to the fact that Strong was no Mack Brown, Muschamp grinned and said, “That’s what always happens. They go the opposite way.” Texas did just that, pushing out the door the gregarious, isn’t-everything-neat Brown and inviting in a stern, no-nonsense Strong. They’re

Charlie Strong isn’t messing around with this bunch. Texas’ football coach is a straight shooter. He’s all Bevo, but he takes no bull. Strong isn’t hesitant to tell you that this is his show, and players who won’t comply with what he’s putting down can get to steppin’. Some already have. Since he arrived on campus in January, Strong has mostly pushed the right buttons. Here are my most important Strong moments from his first preseason in Austin: ■ His show of respect for Mack Brown.
