HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HOLIDAY BAG

1

cut fabric

Cut out the following using your paper templates: (2) template A out of the printed fabric (2) template B out of the coordinating fabric Take paper template A and tape it to template B along the dotted line. This is now shape C. Cut (2) template C out of the lining fabric.

2

iron

Iron all 4 outer pieces of the bag to interfacing. Place your fabric right side down on an ironing board, setting the interfacing adhesive side down on top of it (the adhesive side will appear speckly and textured). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to fuse. Repeat for the remaining 3 pieces. Cut out all 4 pieces from the interfacing and you are ready to sew!

JOINING THE OUTER FABRICS

You will now join the printed and coordinating fabrics to create the outer portion of the bag. Place A above B on your workspace. Fold A down onto B right sides together (A will be upside down). Sew along the top edge and open. Do the same for the remaining two pieces. On the wrong side push the seam allowance up toward top of bag. Turn over and top stitch 1/8” above the seam on both pieces.

SEWING IN THE ZIPPER

Put 1 outer bag piece on your workspace right side up. Place the zipper along the top edge of your fabic teeth down. Line it up so the zipper stopper is just off the fabric on the left side. Next, take 1 piece of lining right side down and place it directly on top. With your zipper foot and heavy-duty needle sew along the top and open.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HOLIDAY BAG

Place second piece of lining right side up on your workspace. Put your working bag right side up on top of the lining. Place your second outer piece right side down on top of that. Sew and open. Top stitch just below the seam along the zipper 1/8” down on both sides. Set aside. Grab your scrap fabric and fold it in half, press with finger. Open it up and press each outer edge to the middle, then fold over again. Sew along outer edge to create keyring tab.

SEWING THE EDGES

Open zipper at least half way. Join so the outer fabrics are right sides together and the lining

pieces are right sides together (the zipper will be hidden in the middle). Fold your keyring tab in half. Place it into the printed side of your working piece 1 1/4” in from the outer edge and 1/4” down from the zipper, pin. (The finished side of the tab will be hidden in the bag) Sew around the perimeter of the bag leaving approximately a 4″ opening in the bottom of the lining. Reinforce the zipper and keyring by sewing over a second time.

SEWING THE CORNERS

Put your hand into the corner of the bag. Line up the two corner seams, pinch together and sew using your template as a guide. Repeat for remaining 3 corners. Trim all approxiamtely 1/4” away from the stitching. Trim excess zipper with scissors (do not use your fabric sheers). Put your hand in the bag and flip inside out. Take a minute to straighten out the outer portion of the bag.

CLOSING YOUR BAG

Take the lining and tuck in the raw edges at the opening. Sew a small seam along the edge. Adorn with a zipper pull of your choosing and shazam your very own holiday bag!
