[email protected] Rules that have been updated/added from 2016-2017 are highlighted in yellow. NUMBER OF PLAYERS Teams will play 6v6 (5 skaters + 1 goaltender). A minimum of 5 players (4 skaters + 1 goaltender) is required to avoid a forfeit. There is no maximum of roster size. If a team falls under the required number of players, the following will occur: If a team falls under the required number to play due to an ejection or disqualification, the game will end as a default. If a team falls under the required number to play due to injury or any other circumstance, the game may continue (at the official’s discretion) until the official or any other intramural staff member on site deems that the team playing down no longer has an opportunity to win or tie. Locker rooms will be assigned by the Joy Burns Front desk staff. Please check the dry-erase board in the Joy Burns lobby for your team’s locker room assignment each evening.
ALCOHOL/DRUG POLICY Any team found having alcohol, including empty cans/bottles/cases in the Ritchie Center (including the locker rooms or in water bottles) will default their game and receive a 0 sportsmanship. Players breaking the policy will be held accountable. If we are unable to point out specific people, the captain being ejected from all of intramural sports indefinitely. It is the captain’s responsibility to ensure all spectators/fans are in compliance with the university’s drug and alcohol policy. Spectators are prohibited from bringing alcohol or drugs to the Ritchie Center. Any issues with spectators/fans may result in disciplinary actions towards the team and/or the team captain, including removal from the league.
PLAYER ELIGIBILITY Each individual may play for only ONE team. Any member of the team appearing on the University of Denver’s Varsity Hockey Rosters or any other intercollegiate rosters for the 2015-2016 or 2016-2017 season will not eligible to play intramural ice hockey. Any members of the team appearing on the University of Denver’s Club Men’s Ice Hockey or Club Inline Hockey rosters are eligible, but may not have more than FOUR members on their roster. There is no limit to the number of female club hockey (ice or inline) participants per team. Please refer to the Varsity Athlete Eligibility and Club Sport Athlete Eligibility sections of the Guide to Procedures to ensure your team is eligible.
APPAREL Players are responsible for bringing darks and lights to avoid jersey conflicts. A double forfeit may be awarded if teams are unable to provide jerseys that will distinguish each team from each other.
TEAM ELIGIBILITY While avoided at all costs, the Student Programs Manager reserves the right to remove a team from the league (with no refund) due to major or reoccurring sportsmanship issues or a violation of the Drug and Alcohol policy. A warning does not need to be provided prior to removal. This decision is final.
FORFEITS Forfeits will be declared at 5 minutes after the scheduled start time. It is imperative that players are on-time and prepared to play due to limited ice time. The game clock will start 5 minutes after the scheduled start time if teams are present but not ready to play.

TIMING Games are three 15-minute periods, with a running clock. Clock will stop on all whistles under three minutes in the third period if the score is within 3 goals. There is no mercy rule. Regular season games may end in a tie. No overtime or shootout will be played. Playoff games will have a 5-minute sudden death overtime period, followed by a best-of-five shootout.
RULES ENFORCEMENT Abuse of officials or other players will not be tolerated under any circumstances. This may result in an immediate ejection from the game. Persistent issues may result in the team’s removal from the league or the captain’s ejection from Intramural Sports.
No checking is allowed. Fighting or any attempt to injure an opponent is prohibited and will result in an immediate ejection and suspension indefinitely from all of Intramural Sports. The minimum result will be suspension from Intramural Sports for the remainder of the quarter. Reinstatement for the next intramural season may occur only after staff review and the ejection process has been followed by the participant. A goal shall be scored when the entire puck is put across the goal line by means of stick or deflection. The puck may not be handled by a player’s hand outside of their defensive zone, except the goalies, unless to guide it to himself/herself. Icing the puck will be enforced. Icing shall be called when any player of a team, equal or superior in numerical strength to the opposing team, shoots, bats with the hand or stick, kicks or deflects the puck from his/her own half of the ice to beyond the goal line of the opposing team. Play shall be immediately stopped and a face-off will ensue at the face-off circle of in the offending team’s end.
EQUIPMENT No one will be permitted to play without these items. Protective pads such as braces, elbow pads, etc… must be worn beneath the uniform Helmet with FULL CAGE Hockey skates with plastic heel guard (goalie excepted) Shin pads Cup Protective gloves Shoulder pads Hockey Stick (No stick may have a curve of more than 1/2 inch on the blade)
OFFICIALS Two referees will be provided for each game via a local ice hockey referees association (not University of Denver staff). Their judgment must be respected. Only the captain may discuss a matter pertaining to the interpretation of the rules. Judgment calls may not be questioned. Any problems or concerns may be brought to the staff in a respectful and professional manner.

PENALTY SHOT The purpose of the penalty shot is to restore a scoring opportunity. They are awarded only under one of the following two conditions: 1. An attacking player in possession of the puck, with only the goalie to beat, is fouled from behind. 2. The puck is picked up or trapped in the crease by a defensive player other than the goalie. All 5 of the following conditions must exist before a penalty shot will be awarded: 1. Player must be over the red line in the attacking end of the rink. 2. Player must have control of the puck. 3. Player must have no one to pass to between self and the goalie. 4. Player must have been fouled from behind (not the side) in desperation. 5. Player must have lost the scoring opportunity. If the player gets a shot off, there will be no penalty shot.
