How to use the strategy Prior knowledge • knowledge of the individual Ideas to emphasize • Attributes of successful leaders may include: –– integrity: having strong moral principles and sticking to those principles –– visionary: looking ahead with foresight and setting goals, thinking beyond the immediate –– charismatic: able to influence or inspire people –– trustworthy: reliable, dependable, worthy of trust –– flexible: the quality of changing strategies to fit changed circumstances –– resourceful: getting the optimum value for all available resources –– motivated: believes in the importance of the issue / action –– decisive: able to make decisions –– insightful: ability to see beyond the obvious. • Consistent evidence is needed to support a conclusion. Instructional suggestions • Invite students to suggest people who they consider to be effective leaders. Consider leaders at the school, community and national / international levels. • For each leader, instruct students to discuss and record attributes that make this person stand out. Share information in a class discussion. Purpose This strategy helps me identify qualities that contribute to successful leadership and judge the extent to which an individual demonstrates these qualities.

Instructions • Before you begin, make sure you know the qualities of an effective leader. • Identify an individual whose leadership you will examine. • Find out about the individual’s role as a leader. What did they accomplish? Who did they lead / influence? • Ask yourself whether or not the individual is an effective leader. • Identify several leadership qualities that were important and relevant to the individual. • Record the qualities in the first column on the activity sheet. • Consider whether or not the individual demonstrated each quality. Provide evidence to illustrate whether or not the quality was demonstrated. • For each quality, provide several pieces of evidence. • Based on the evidence, judge the extent to which the individual demonstrated each quality, using the scale:  1 – not at all   2 – somewhat   3 – definitely.
