INTRAMURAL SAND VOLLEYBALL RULES Rule 1 – Eligibility Rule 2 – Court and Equipment Rule 3 – Team Composition Rule 4 – Game Play Rule 5 – Hits Rule 6 – Co-Rec Modifications 2016 Rule Changes Rule 4, Section II First Two Sets The first two sets shall be 25 points (no cap), and a team must win by two points.

RULE 1 - ELIGIBILITY I.

All games will be played on the sand volleyball courts north of Watkins between Robinson and the Price Computing Center. Game balls will be provided by the Intramural Sports staff. RULE 3 - TEAM COMPOSITION

A team shall consist of 4 players. A team must have at least 3 players to start and continue a game. Substitutes can be made after any dead ball. The substitute must replace the person who occupies the back left position after any necessary rotation. RULE 4 - GAME PLAY

A regulation match consists of the best two out of three games. The first two sets shall be 25 points (no cap), and a team must win by two points.

The third and deciding set shall be 15 points (no cap), and a team must win by two points.

After the first and second sets, teams will exchange sides of the court.

Rally scoring will be utilized. A team does not have to serve to score a point. There will be a 40 minute time-limit per match. P a g e |1 Rev. 08.16

At the end of 40 minutes, the first team to gain a two-point lead will be declared the winner of that game. If the teams are in game two at the end of the 40 minute time-limit and the first team to gain a two point lead lost the first game, a third game will be played according to Rule 4-VIII.

If the match is tied one-set to one-set at the end of the 40 minute time-limit, the first team to gain a two point advantage in the third game will be declared as the winner. If a team already has a two point advantage, they will be declared the winner of the game and match.

Each team is allowed one (1) timeout of sixty seconds in length per set. Unused timeouts do not carry over to the next set. RULE 5 - HITS

When the ball crosses the net, the receiving team is allowed three legal hits to pass the ball over the net. Blocking on a spike attempt does not count as a legal hit.

“Let” serves are legal. This means a ball may touch the net on a serve, pass over the net, and be considered a legal serve.

Illegal hits will include the following: a. Open-faced hits with the hand (under handed). b. Setting a hard-driven serve. c. Bumps with the hands separated. RULE 6 - CO-REC MODIFICATIONS

The Co-rec game shall be played between two teams of 4 players: a. 2 men and 2 women Teams playing with 3 players shall be: a. 2 men and 1 woman b. 1 man and 2 women

There are no positional gender restrictions.

IV.

There are no requirements for the alternating contacts, or both genders contacting the ball if played more than once on a side.
