Principal’s Message

Happy New Year! I would like to welcome everyone back to school. I hope your winter vacation was filled with wonderful memories. As we return to school, it is very important that we begin 2017 with structured routines to support our children academically, socially and emotionally. It is important that we ensure children attend school every day, on time. Please remember that school hours are 8:20 am - 2:40 pm. Our doors open at 7:50 am, where we provide a warm and safe place for students to receive a free breakfast. Since instruction begins promptly at 8:20, students are expected to arrive early enough to unpack and get settled in order to be prepared for learning at 8:20 am. Students are marked "tardy" each time they arrive at school after 8:20am. I look forward to another productive and successful year working collaboratively with our families and school community. As always, thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Ms. Santiago

Dear Parents,

This month we are focusing on setting goals for the New Year. It is important for students to learn how to set goals in order to become successful. Here are some strategies to assist you in helping your child make goals. Encourage your child to start small. Your child probably won’t go from reading 10 minutes a week to finishing an entire book in that time. Help them figure out smaller steps. “How about if you read for 30 minutes before bed?” • Think about the rewards. If your child needs to raise her math grade, help her focus on the benefits of doing that. It will be easier to make the necessary changes. • Plan for obstacles. If your child always watches TV after school, help them think about what to do instead. • Celebrate successes. Change is not always easy. If your child didn’t read for 30 minutes a day, but did manage to read on four days this week, that’s still a lot more reading than they were doing before!

If you have questions or concerns, it is important that you first speak with your child’s teacher. After speaking to the teacher, the following staff members are always available to assist you: School Base Support Team Mr. Lazare – School psychologist Mr. Dormeus – School Social Worker Ms. Pacheco – Family Worker Health Maria Fasulo – School Nurse Guidance Counselors Sophia Triant – Guidance Counselor Sonia Christie – Guidance Counselor Jazmine Santiago – Principal Christine Kenny – Assistant principal
