Girls Basketball Camps in July Three Wade Scott’s Girls’ Basketball Camps have been set for July 18-22 in the Steinke Center at Texas A&M-Kingsville. An individual shooting/skill camp for girls fourth through sixth grades will be from 9-11 a.m. each day. A Little Javelina Camp for girls kindergarten through third grade will be from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

A 33-match schedule has been set for the 2016 Texas A&MKingsville volleyball team and 12 of the matches will be in the Steinke Center. The schedule includes tournaments in Memphis, Tenn., and Pueblo, Colo. Twenty of the matches will be against Lone Star Conference opponents, including newcomers Texas-Permian Basin and Western New Mexico. Six of the final eight regularseason matches will be on the home court. The Lone Star Conference Championships will be Nov. 17-19 at the site of the No. 1 seed. Tanya Allen, beginning her fifth season as head of the Javelina program, had no seniors on last year’s roster, and has signed several transfers and freshmen to bolster the roster. ROBERTO GARZA WAS inducted into the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame last weekend in Laredo. The ceremony, at the Laredo Country Club, was a first class event as seven individuals and one team were inducted. The team was the McFarland High School cross country team from McFarland, Calif. The movie “McFarland USA” was based on the squad’s formation and successes at the California state meets. Two members of the team were at the ceremony along with the wife of a third member who is in the U.S. Army and stationed in Kuwait. Roberto had members of his family present including wife, the former Ashley Golden, who was a member of the Javelina volleyball and cross country teams while at TAMUK. Garza joins several other Javelinas in the Hall. These include football player Willie Crafts, sportswriter David Flores, track and field athlete Tony Garza, track and field athlete Robert Gonzalez, track and field athlete David Hinojosa, football player E.C. Lerma, track and field athlete Homer Martinez, football player Carlos Saldana and football player Raul Trevino. Garza was an 11-time All-American in football and track and field while with the Javelinas. He went on to a 14-year career in the NFL, the first four years with the Atlanta Falcons and the final 10 as an offensive line starter with the Chicago Bears. Garza is now the Spanish speaking analyst for Telemundo Fox Deportes and ESPN Deportes and has been on the broadcast teams for the past two Super Bowls.

JAMES CAMERON III, who would have been a senior running back on the Oklahoma Panhandle State football team this fall, died in a swimming accident in North Carolina during the Memorial Day weekend. Russell Gaskamp, head coach of the Aggies, said, “Our team is absolutely distraught with the news, and James will be missed immensely. Our team foundation is ‘Strength, Unity and Family’ and we will have to lean on and take care of each other now more than ever.” Panhandle will become a member of the Lone Star Conference in football this fall. Another drowning of an athlete came later last week when Vanderbilt freshman pitcher Donny Everett drowned on Thursday night. It came as the Vanderbilt team was preparing to open NCAA Division I regional play at home Friday. Everett was the second Vanderbilt athlete to drown within the past 13 months. Dai-Jon Parker, who played basketball for the Commodores, drowned in May 2015.

THE LONE STAR Football Festival will not be held this season after five seasons in the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium. There will be three NCAA Division I games in the stadium: Southern California vs. Alabama Sept. 3, Arkansas vs. Texas A&M Sept. 24 and Texas Tech vs. Baylor Nov. 25.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes: …David Goggin of Angelo State received the Elite 90 Award at the NCAA Division II World Series banquet in Cary, N.C. It is the second year Goggin has been recognized. The award honors the individual who has reached the national championship tournament while achieving the highest grade point average among those participating in the World Series. Goggin graduated from ASU with a 3.98 cumulative grade point average. ...Dr. Greg Waggoner has been named the new athletic director at Eastern New Mexico. He served as athletic director at Western (Colo.) State for 20 years, from 1994 to 2014. Waggoner is a graduate of Western State and holds a doctorate from Northern Colorado. He replaces Jeff Geiser, who retired after seven years as ENMU athletic director. ...Several Lone Star Conference players and coaches received individual honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Garcia Makes All-American Second Team Texas A&M-Kingsville shot putter Christian Garcia was named to the NCAA Division II Track & Field All-America second team by the U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association last week. The Javelinas had 16 athletes on the All-America first unit. The second team includes athletes who finished ninth through 12th in the national championships in Bradenton, Fla. He was the Texan head coach from 1990-2002 and the team won two LSC titles. Before going to TSU, he was head coach at Ranger Junior College. He retired from coaching in 2002. ...Isabel Jimenez-Perea of Tarleton was named the PING Women’s Golf Coaches Association Division II player of the year. She finished the season as the No. 1-ranked golfer in Division II with an average of 72.67. Perea was third in the national tournament this spring. McDermott of ColoradoMesa are finalists. …Jule and Helen Minium have created a scholarship that will be awarded each year to a West Texas A&M student-athlete pursuing a degree in business. They had originally planned to award the scholarship to an accounting student but they have attended so many WTAM athletic events they decided to assist an athlete. …Adams (Colo.) State and Hillsdale (Mich.) have been named the NCAA Division II cross country/track and field programs of the year. Baseball Adds Wharton JC Player Dallas Stefano, who has played at Wharton County Junior College for the past two years, has signed a national letter of intent with the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team. Stefano, 6-1, 200-pound outfielder and first baseman from Houston (Cypress-Creek), hit .318 in his two years at Wharton and had 21 home runs and 83 runs batted in. Stefano is the 12th signee for the Javelinas and the second from Wharton. The earlier signee was Isaiah Lybarger, pitcher from Corpus Christi (Carroll). The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team was ranked No. 34, out of 266 NCAA Division II schools with the sport, in last week’s national poll compiled by Massey’s Ratings. Nova Southeastern, North Alabama Win In Baseball, Softball Nova Southeastern won the NCAA Division II national baseball title last week and North Alabama took the softball championship earlier in the week. Nova Southeastern defeated Millersville (Pa.), 2-1, 8-6, in the championship series in Cary, N.C. North Alabama downed Humboldt (Calif.) State, 4-1, in the “if necessary” game of the softball championship series, played in Denver, Colo.

Garza Inducted Into Latin American Hall

Roberto Garza, Texas A&M-Kingsville 11-time All-American in football and track and field, was inducted into the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame last weekend at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo. After a four-year career with the Javelinas, he played for the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears in the NFL. He was a Bears’ offensive lineman for 10 seasons, starting 145 games at center and at both offensive guard positions. Garza’s last season with the Bears was 2014. He currently is the Spanish speaking analyst for Telemundo Fox Deportes and ESPN Deportes and has been on the broadcast team for the two past Super Bowls. Javelinas Have Had an Impressive List of Track & Field All-Americans

The Texas A&M-Kingsville All-America first-team track and field list continued to expand with 2016 outdoor athletes receiving 16 spots on the list. They give the Javelinas 274 positions on NCAA Division I and Division II and NAIA All-America first units. Darrell Green is one of the few NAIA and Division II athletes to be an NCAA Division I AllAmerican. He participated in the 1982 Division I meet and made the All-America squad in the 100meter and 200-meter dashes. Green made the most AllAmerica positions during his career. He was on 12 of the teams during his career with the Javelinas. Lashawndra Ratcliff, a sprinter, received nine All-America spots in 2003-05. High jumper Jeron Robinson and pole vaulter Jordan Yamoah join Ben Clark as eight-time firstteam All-Americans. Kaina Martinez, a sprinter who has another year of eligibility, has been an All-American six times.
