Football Takes on McMurry in Abilene In Lone Star Matchup

Hog-Tied Javelina defenders hog-tie a Texas A&M-Commerce ball carrier in last weekend’s Lone Star Football Festival in Arlington. The Javelinas are Anthony Forker (5), senior defensive back from Houston; Mark Savere (41), senior linebacker from San Antonio (Warren), and Kelechi Amushie (28), sophomore defensive back from Richmond (Terry). Moving in to assist is Lamont Hills (21), junior defensive back from San Antonio (Stevens). (Photo by Artie Leal).

Texas A&M-Kingsville will try to even its Lone Star Conference football record this weekend as it travels to Abilene to take on the McMurry WarHawks. Game time will be 6 p.m. in McMurry’s Moore Stadium on campus. The Javelinas and McMurry opened their LSC seasons last weekend, TAMUK losing to Texas A&M-Commerce, 55-20, in the Lone Star Football Festival and McMurry dropping a 45-14 decision to Angelo State. McMurry is competing in the LSC this fall despite having announced it will leave the league after this season and move back to NCAA Division III. The Javelinas and McMurry have had a long-time gridiron

history, having played for the first time in 1932, the eighth season of football for the Javelinas. The WarHawks were in the LSC in 1965-71 and overall, the teams have met 19 times. The Javelinas hold a 12-6-1 edge. The Javelinas are 1-2 for the year while McMurry is 1-1, having beaten NCAA Division IAA Houston Baptist in its

opener. The Javelinas are averaging 279.7 total yards a game, 153.3 rushing and 126.4 passing. Defensively, the squad has allowed 381 total yards an outing, 172.3 rushing and 208.7 passing. Trey Mitchell, 6-3, 190pound junior quarterback from Clovis, Calif., leads the team offensively, averaging 59.0 (Continued on Page 4)

The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team will host Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman’s for Lone Star Conference matches this weekend in the Steinke Center. The Javelinas will take on TAMUC at 7 p.m. Friday and TWU at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Javelinas took a 7-4 season’s record into a Tuesday night match with Texas A&M International in Laredo. The squad is 1-3 in the LSC. Casey Klobedans, 5-10

freshman setter from Boerne (Champion), is the Javelina attack leader with a .362 percentage. Ashley Bukowski, 5-8 sophomore outside hitter from Harlingen, averages 2.95 kills a set and leads the team in that category. She has a .339 attack percentage. Brett Zaccardo, 5-7 freshman libero from Amarillo (Bushland), averages 4.3 digs a set and Ashley Tipps, 5-10 senior middle blocker from Houston (Cypress Woods), has 1.05 blocks a set.

THE LONE STAR Football Festival in the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington was again a success. It was the fourth year of the Festival and all have been successful, and a great experience for the Lone Star Conference schools. There’s no better experience than to go to a game in the facility, the most spectacular in football. The Festival itself is one-of-a-kind in college football. This year saw four games in one day. The schedule has seen games played over three-day and two-day periods in the past. Fifteen of the games have been televised, including the Javelinas’ game with Texas A&M-Commerce last weekend. KDFTV of Corpus Christi had live coverage. Several of the teams involved in the Festival each fall have gone on to participate in the NCAA Division II postseason playoffs later in the year. There have been 20 different teams from eight states and two countries participating over the four-year span. The schools have been: Abilene Christian Monterrey Tech-Mexico City Angelo State Monterrey Tech-Puebla (Mexico) Chadron (Neb.) State North Alabama Colorado State-Pueblo Shorter (Ga.) Delta (Miss.) State Sul Ross State Eastern New Mexico Tarleton State Florida Tech Texas A&M-Commerce Incarnate Word Texas A&M-Kingsville Midwestern State Valdosta (Ga.) State Monterrey Tech (Mexico) West Texas A&M

THE LSC WILL become innovative again in November when it becomes the first league to have a postseason playoff in football. The eight schools in the conference will have two weeks of playoffs to determine a playoff champion. The top four teams in the final regular-season standings will (Continued on Page 3)

Trip To Abilene, Site of Numerous Javelina Games Since the 1930s When the Texas A&MKingsville football team goes to Abilene this weekend for a Lone Star Conference encounter with McMurry, the Javelinas might want to take some pictures. It will be their last game in Abilene in the foreseeable future. The Javelinas have had games in Abilene since 1932, the seventh season of football for the South Texans. With McMurry and Abilene Christian on the schedule for a majority of the seasons, Javelina athletes and players are familiar with the city. But ACU is now in the Southland Conference and McMurry is dropping back to NCAA Division III after this season. The prospects for future games with the schools aren’t in the picture. The Javelinas have met McMurry 19 times and nine of the games have been in Abilene. The Javelinas and ACU have played on 46 occasions and 22 games have been in Abilene. ACU has played its home games in Shotwell Stadium and when the Javelinas were meeting McMurry in the past the games were in the same facility. McMurry now plays in an

on-campus stadium. The Javelinas have also played another Abilene school, Hardin-Simmons, twice.

Those games were in 1935 and 1936 and both were in Abilene. Most of the matchups between the Javelinas and Wildcats and WarHawks have been when the schools were cohorts in the Lone Star Conference. ACU was in the LSC from 1973 through 2012 and McMurry was a member in 1965-71 and rejoined in 2013 only to withdraw at the end of this season.

(Continued from Page 2) play in one bracket and the next four squads will be involved in a second bracket. The first weekend will see the No. 1 team hosting No. 4 and No. 2 hosting No. 3. Those two winners will meet for the postseason title the second weekend and the two first-round losers will meet for the third-place spot. In the other bracket, No. 5 will host No. 8 and No. 6 will host No. 7. As in the top bracket, the two first-round winners meet for the fifth-place spot and the first round losers will battle for the No. 7 position. The playoff weekends are Nov. 8 and 15.

IT’S NOT UNUSUAL for NCAA Division II teams, in all sports, to knock off NCAA Division I-AA (football) and Division I (other sports) squads now and then. Despite their programs with much fewer scholarships, the Division II teams whip their foes, many times clubs that were Division II but decided to move to the “big time”. After the first two weeks of the season, several of the DII clubs had claimed such victories. Probably the biggest came when Colorado State-Pueblo upset Sam Houston State, 47-21, in Huntsville. Sam Houston was ranked No. 15 in Division I-AA at the time. McMurry, competing in the Lone Star Conference this fall but moving back to Division III next year, downed Houston Baptist of the Southland Conference, 26-17. The ole alma mater, Henderson (Ark.) State, beat Nicholls (La.) State of the Southland, 27-10. Fort Valley (Ga.) State, coached by former Javelina assistant Don Pittman, whipped Savannah (Ga.) State, 42-28. Other DII decisions over DI-AA opponents saw Catawba (N.C.) beating Davidson (N.C.), 35-7; Florida Tech besting Stetson (Fla.), 54-12, and St. Joseph’s (Ind.) defeating Valparaiso (Ind.), 31-10. As you can see, the scores weren’t even close.

AL HARRIS, FORMER Javelina cornerback who had a 14year career in the NFL, has a son, Al Harris Jr., playing for the University of South Carolina football team. He’s a 5-11, 162-pound freshman cornerback. Harris, the Javelina, is a member of the coaching staff for the Kansas City Chiefs.

ADAM PENA COMPETED in the Budapest (Hungary) Half Marathon last week and finished 35th in his age group in a time of 1:29.40. He missed his personal best by 31 seconds, which came last year in the Dublin (Ireland) Half Marathon. Pena is a former member of the Javelina cross country team who has competed in races throughout the world. (Continued on Page 4)

Javelina Hash By By Fred Fred Nuesch, Nuesch, Coordinator Coordinator of of Athletic Athletic External External (Continued from Page 3) RIGO MORALES IS the new head boys track and field coach at Corpus Christi Carroll High School. Morales is a former Javelina track and field athlete. Checking the Corpus Christi Independent School District high school coaches, there is an impressive list of former Javelinas holding head positions. I may have missed some, but here are the former Javelina athletes I found: …..With Morales at Carroll is Mike Leal, head baseball coach. …..At Miller High School are Janice Williams, head volleyball coach, and Simon Guerrero, boys cross country coach. Williams played basketball for the Javelinas. …..At Moody High School are Paula Salinas, head softball coach, and Joe Curiel, head baseball coach. (Continued from Page 4) The Javelinas went back in 1976 and took a 56-21 victory. The stadium overlooks Pearl Harbor and has a 50,000-seat capacity. It has hosted several bowl games, including the Aloha Bowl for 20 years. The Oahu Bowl was added in 1998 and it became the first stadium to host a bowl doubleheader. Both bowls died and the arena now hosts the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. The Pro Bowl was played there in 1980-2009 and returned in 2011. Several Javelinas have played in the Pro Bowl. The stadium has also hosted stars such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Gloria Estefan, Whitey Houston and Celine Dion. High school playoffs and graduations are held there and other sports occasionally use it. Aloha Stadium is no doubt the only facility in the U.S. serving Hawaiian food in its concession stands. I would assume this includes poi. The parking lot at the stadium has swap meets three days a week, even on game days. Hundreds of vendors setup on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday throughout the year. Several thousand Javelina fans witnessed their team’s appearances in Aloha Stadium. More than 800 fans took tours to the Islands in 1975 and again in 1976 when the football team made its imprint on the stadium field.
