WITH THE ANNOUNCING of the new Javelina head football coach, a lot of excitement has been created among the Javelina fans. There’s lots of talk about the 2015 season despite the first game being 244 days away. The schedule also has the fans buzzing. The first game with Incarnate Word in San Antonio has always been popular with the Javelinas. Having a road game just over two hours away is a rarity for the Blue and Gold faithful. The Javelinas have had as many as 4,000 supporters in the stands for the UIW games in San Antonio. After the UIW trip, the Javelinas play three consecutive games in Javelina Stadium.

ROBERTO GARZA SIGNED a one-year contract extension with the Chicago Bears last week. The former Javelina is the starting center for the club. He has been in the NFL for 14 seasons and 10 of those have been in Chicago. Garza was originally signed by the Atlanta Falcons after being drafted in the fourth round in 2001. Phil Emery, general manager of the Bears, said, “Extremely happy for Roberto, his family and the Chicago Bears that Roberto will remain with the team. He has been a consistently good positive producer and key contributor to our offensive line for an extended time period along with being a leader and role model to everyone on our team and in the greater Chicago community.” Garza, 35, is the longest tenured member of the Chicago offense and had missed only two games prior to this season. He was out four games this year with an ankle injury. Garza and his wife, the former Ashley Golden, a Javelina cross country and volleyball athlete while an undergraduate, have been community leaders in Atlanta and Chicago. He has held a football camp for Hispanic boys and girls and he and Ashley have provided monetary donations to the Empty Stocking Fund and the Falcons Feed the Homeless campaign. He has been on offensive lines that have blocked for seven 1,000-yard rushers. Garza has been a team captain for the past three seasons. Garza was one of the most honored college athletes ever while with the Javelinas. He was on 15 All-America first teams in football and track and field. The All-America squads were: …..Associated Press Little All-America football team in 1999 and 2000. …..American Football Coaches Association All-America unit in 1999 and 2000. …..Daktronics’ All-America football squad in 1999 and 2000. …..D2Football.com All-America in 2000. …..USAFootball.com All-America in 2000. …..Football Gazette All-America in 1999 and 2000. …..All-America Football Foundation All-America in 1999. …..NCAA Division II All-America in track and field in the outdoor shot put in 1999 and 2000, indoor shot put in 2000 and outdoor discus in 2000. The victory for the Javelinas in the first game spoiled a perfect home season for the Mavericks, who (Continued on Page 16)

(Continued from Page 15) finished 31-1 on their home field. The Javelinas opened regional play with a 9-2 victory over St. Edward’s, the defending champion and the squad that edged the Javelinas in an “if necessary” game last spring in Kingsville. West Texas A&M downed the Javelinas, 17-3, on the second day of the meet, knocking the club into the consolation bracket. The Javelinas fought back to defeat Tarleton State, 8-6, and West Texas, 7-4, in back-to-back games Saturday night. That gave the South Texans a spot in the championship round with Mesa. for 762 yards and eight touchdowns last season, missing his own single-season record for catches by one. One of Armstrong’s best single-game performances came in the Cowboys’ stadium last fall. The NCAA doesn’t recognize statistics against international opponents unless they are members of the NCAA. THE MEN’S TRACK and field team had an outstanding NCAA Division II outdoor meet. The Javelnas finished fourth among the 60 teams participating, had the top scorer in the men’s division of the meet, a Javelina tied a national record and the Javelinas had nine athletes earn 11 All-America spots. Jeron Robinson, junior from Houston (Travis), tied the national record in winning the high jump with a 7-6.5 clearance. It was the second consecutive outdoor title for Robinson, who is one of the top-ranked jumpers in all college divisions. Defending pole vault champion Jordan Yamoah, sophomore from Arlington, N.Y., tied for first place but got the silver medal after losing a tiebreaker. C.J. Griggs, senior from Van Vleck, was the defending champion in the triple jump but had to withdraw after the preliminaries because of an injury that has plagued him throughout the season. Price was a three-time AllAmerican at the meet, in the 100meter and 200-meter dashes and as a member of the relay unit. (The second part of the 2014 Javelina Athletic Department Highlights will appear in the next issue of the Javelina Highlights).
