HOME-and-HOME SERIES, DAY 2: NJCU and Kean complete their twoday, home-and-home series after the third-ranked Cougars survived a scare from the Knights, winning, 1-0. In a true pitchers’ duel, NJCU sophomore Wendell Rodriguez was brilliant, allowing only one hit through seven innings and finished with a four-hitter, allowing no walks with five strikeouts. It was his second consecutive heartbreaking loss despite pitching well. Cougar senior Joe Bartlinski earned the completegame, 126-pitch shutout, allowing four hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk. Kean rookie Shane Alvarez had the gamewinning RBI single in the eighth inning. It was the second year in a row DÉJÀ VU: Yesterday marked the second year in a row that NJCU lost a one-run game in Union. Last year, Kean rallied for an 8-7 win. SO CLOSE, SO OFTEN: NJCU is 1-6 at home this season. The veteran-laden club has been snake-bitten at times. NJCU has lost seven games by two or less runs and 14 games by four or fewer runs. GONZALEZ TWO FROM 100: Rob Gonzalez enters the game fourth in program history with 99 career runs scored and is seeking to become only the fourth player to cross the plate 100 times in a career. He achieved his 150th career hit in yesterday’s loss to Kean, moving past head coach Jonathan Thomas for sixth place in program history. Next up is Dave Long (1987-90) with 154 hits. WITTE UP THE HIT CHARTS: Ken Witte has a chance to be the 34th member of the 100-hit club this year. He has 86 career hits entering today’s action.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION RANKINGS: Kean, the defending NJAC Champions, is ranked No. 3 nationally by both the National Collegiate Baseball Writer Association (NCBWA)/D3baseball.com and ABCA Coaches Polls. RECENT SERIES: NJCU’s last win over Kean was on March 29, 2002 in Union, NJ—an 8-1 win. Since then, the national-power Cougars have won the last 16 meetings. However, many of those games have been close, with seven decided by four or fewer runs. MOUND MACHINE: Kean has held its opponents to a remarkably low .218 batting average this season (193-887) and just 84 runs in 27 games (3.11 per game). Meanwhile, the Cougars pitching staff has a staggering 1.88 ERA—the second best in the nation—with six shutouts; its opponents are at a 6.14 ERA. Kean ranks eighth in Division III in hits allowed per nine innings (7.37) and 11th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.6). As a team, Kean, with 83 steals, is 14th. ***THE NCAA, ECAC, NEW JERSEY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE AND NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY PROMOTE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP BY STUDENT-ATHLETES, COACHES, STAFF AND SPECTATORS.
