Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Guild Newsletter
Meeting: Nov 11, 2014 First United Church William & King Streets, Waterloo 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Knit and Chat 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Guild Meeting
A Word from the President Welcome knitters to 2015, a whole new year of knitting, learning and mentoring. I hope that the just past holiday season included some time for you to relax and knit while savouring the visits and traditions of your family and friends. My Christmas tree included some knitting related gifts that I will enjoy in the year to come. I look forward to meeting with you at our January meeting when we will learn about the history of knitting. It will be fascinating to learn about knitting as necessity, craft, art and product and how all have changed and evolved through the years.

Program Update: January Meeting: The History of Knitting This month we are excited to be hosting Brittney Baldwin she is fabulous knitter and we are so glad to have her come and speak at the January meeting. She is in a Masters of Cultural Analysis and Social Theory program at Laurier and she is studying knitting as an aspect of identity, diaspora, and rebellion for her major research project. She is presenting about the history of knitting and its origins.

Parking I would like to remind everyone to not park in the church parking lot. It is very tiny, many meetings run concurrently with our own, and there is not enough space for everyone. The Town Square lot that is right beside the church is free and spacious. Please park there.

Communications Update: Guild Constitution Review Dear Members;
I would like to remind everyone that a part of the January meeting will be taken up with a vote on the proposed revisions to the Constitution and By-Laws of the K-W Knitters Guild. All the information as to changes was presented at the November meeting and remains available via the web site at http://www kwknittersguild.ca.
The Constitution review committee has reduced the changes to 12 motions which require a vote, as many of the changes could be tied together. In order to occupy as little of the meeting as possible with the changes, we would appreciate everyone's help in sticking to the following guidelines for conducting the vote: • all Members should pick up their name tag and a door prize draw ticket. The count of tickets will be used to determine number of members in attendance and that 75% are in approval. • discussion of the changes will be limited and restricted only to clarifications of the exact motions being presented. Members who would like to see additional or different changes in the document may call for further review at a future time and are welcome to participate in any future committee. • when the vote is called please raise one hand in favour or against and keep it raised until the count is complete. If anyone in attendance will have difficulty holding a hand in the air for a minute or so, please identify yourself upon entry and we will arrange a proxy method for you • each motion will be shown in writing and read out, and copies of supporting documents will be on hand. Please vote rather than abstain if you can. This is a key function of your Membership in the Guild!

Membership Update:
I normally use this space to gush about the yarn we've picked for the door prize at the upcoming meeting, but since I already showed it off in December, I'll keep the description brief. Toni and I collaborated on the following for our super-sized January door prize: • one skein of Madelintosh's Tosh Merino Light in Technicolor Dreamcoat • Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Shadow and Rippey • A copy of Judith Durant's Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders to give you ideas for your beautiful sockweight yarns.
Since September of 2013, we've added nearly 50 new members to the Guild, about a third of our current population. New and old members alike enjoy the benefits of meeting with like minds, discounts at local yarn shops, the lending library, workshops and other learning opportunities, but I'd like you to take a minute to think about how you support the primary goals of the Guild: • to improve the skill and artistry of our craft • to increase the interest in, and knowledge of, knitting and related activities • to promote and celebrate our craft in the Kitchener-Waterloo area
The voting on the proposed changes to the constitution brings all of these to light. Our current constitution mandates that members must volunteer for events such as the Knitters' Fair and Adjudicated Show, but there is so much more that members can do for the Guild and for each other. In addition to volunteering at the big events, form closer relationships with other guild members by volunteering at smaller community events like Culture Days at the Joseph Schneider Haus. Challenge yourself to try new techniques and new yarns, and share your experience and knowledge with other members. Take on an executive, committee, or volunteer table position, or do some writing for the website or newsletter. Know your constitution and make informed decisions about how the Guild is run. I hope to see you all in January during our review of the Constitution and voting on proposed changes.

Library Update Welcome 2015!! It's a new year, and that means New Year's resolutions for many people. My personal resolution is to make sure I get offline more often and spend that time knitting instead. Any one else have knitting goals? If you're trying to learn some knew techniques (maybe something from skills night in December) make sure to check out what we have in the library and, of course, let me know if there are any new books or topics you'd like to see in the library.

Yarn Table The yarn table is a great way to get rid of any yarns you don't want anymore, and to make room in the new year for new stash. Just set prices and bring a list of your yarns/quantities/prices with your name on it.
Don’t forget to scope out the yarn table for new-to-you bargains, too!
Knit and Chat Before the Monthly Knitter's Guild Meeting The hall at First United Church is open to us before our meeting. We can gather to knit and chat from 6:30 on. The membership table and library will be open at 7:00. Our meeting will take place as usual from 7:30 to 9:30.
Volunteer Corner Volunteering is a great way to meet fellow members. Opportunities arise from time to time for helping out at a particular meeting or event. If you are able to help out, please contact Erin McKee, the volunteer coordinator, during a meeting or at
[email protected].

Other Stuff The website team is working on a members-only section of the website. In this section, you will be able to find executive meeting minutes, budgets, and year end reports. This information will also be available in a binder at the library. It is important for the members to have access this information, but it is not information that needs to be posted for the general public. All of the information that you are used to seeing on the website—newsletters, meeting information, etc.—will still be publically available.
Newsletter Have you ever wanted to submit a piece to be published in the newsletter? Send any inquiries or entries to
[email protected]. All entries must be submitted by 2 weeks before the next Guild meeting date. The next submission deadline will be for the December Newsletter: November 25, 2014. Every time you send something in to be printed in the newsletter, you get a chance to win a gift certificate in May.

Free to a good home: knitting needles / crochet hooks I have been given a large number of knitting needles from 2 sides of a family - and I don't need this many needles! If any knitters out there want a complete set of needles, plus some circular and dpns, let me know, and I'd be happy to pass them along for free. I also have an almost complete set of crochet hooks. Knitting Nonchalantly: We are just a small group of people who like to socialize with knitting needles in hand. We are a group that has lots of fun and never takes itself too seriously! We meet every Thursday from 4-6pm at 7 Shores in Waterloo (on Regina), though to be honest, we are often gone by 520pm. We are a diverse group welcoming of all abilities, walks of life and interests. None among us are master knitters/crocheters, but anything we do know, we are happy to share with someone who asks. We value that it is a small, quiet group and like that there is an openness to people just sitting and chatting. Not everyone feels like knitting for the entire time - or at all! We would encourage anyone interested in joining our group to stop by and check it out! Friday Shall We Knit? from early afternoon until closing in Waterloo.
