Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Guild Newsletter May 2013

Programme: Finishing with Ashley Reid We’ve made it to the end of another Guild year! What better way to end it than with a talk about finishing? This month we talk about more than just finishing projects, but also endings (and the beginnings they come from, and in turn, bring about) in general. Our guest this month is Ashley Reid from All Strung Out Fine Yarns in Guelph. Not just a yarn store owner, Ashley has also worked at Harlequin, and has recently embarked on a new career as a Social Media specialist. When she isn’t knitting, deadlifting, or playing board games, she can be found spending time with her two adorkable Boston Terriers, named Bowser and Zelda (Zelda’s the girl). As I finish up two years of volunteering as Programming Coordinator and hand the job to the very capable Cheryl McLeod, I am amazed at how much I learned while researching and preparing for each month. I’d like to give a huge thanks to all of the speakers, members of the Executive, and Guild members who made this such a memorable and valuable experience!

Meeting Date: May 14, 2013 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. First United Church William & King Streets, Waterloo Finishing KWKG Executive 2012-2013 These are the people who volunteer their time to make your Guild the best it can be. Do you have a flair for taxes? Do thoughts of percentages run through your head at night? Then you are just the person we are looking for! The Guild executive has recently become aware that we need to register for an HST number and begin remitting taxes to the government. Any assistance or wisdom that you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

A Word from the President: A year has flown by already: it’s May and the last Guild meeting of the year is upon us. We’ve done so much this year, and there are great big plans in the works for next year’s program. Our 2012-13 year saw significant changes to our Guild Executive committee, with several long-standing members stepping down from their positions to just enjoy membership for a while, which left room to welcome new faces and ideas to our team. Angela’s overall programming theme this year has taken us from project start to finish, with everything from colour selection to working with non-animal fibres. And equally important to the work you saw at each meeting were the changes happening behind the scenes with your Guild: reviewing the Guild constitution (still a work in progress), sorting out financials and budgeting, and preparing to introduce us to the wonderful world of HST. I am finishing my year as Guild President after the May meeting, and passing on the torch to Dee-Anne Shillinglaw. It’s been such a great learning experience and I appreciate this little Guild of ours so much more for it. While we’re on the topic of next year, let’s daydream about a few of the highlights. You’ll all go off for the summer and perhaps stray from your knitting for a few months when you’re in vacation mode, but you’ll all come back for the Fair. That’s right, the start of the Guild year means the Knitters’ Fair is on! This year’s Fair will be Saturday, September 14, at our new location at The Aud in Kitchener. Postcards will be available at the May meeting for you to keep on your fridge with all of the important information. More details will be available on the Guild website. Next year is also an Adjudicated Show year, and you can already start thinking about what you might want to work on over the summer to submit next year. The theme for the Guild year and the Show is “Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” and just like the Fair, more information will be coming to you soon on the website. Our May meeting is also a time for our members to get caught up on the financials of the Guild. As members, you have a right to know how the Executive is managing the organization, and we take the time this month at our annual general meeting to present our spending and expenses from this year, as well as the budget for our upcoming year. As a reminder, members are always welcome to attend monthly Executive meetings, just get in touch with any member of the Executive for the meeting time and location (our contact information can be found on the first page of the newsletter). So what’s in store for you, our members, next year? More involvement with our community (keep your eye on Angela for more information about “Knit-vember”), more opportunities to be social and learn with your fellow Guild members (Alison will keep us in the loop), a chance to shine at the Adjudicated Show next June (Catherine has all the details), and a year-long theme that will keep you on your toes and tie everything together (we’re looking to you, Cheryl). Join us next year, bring your friends, and have a fantastic summer. Happy knitting,

Victoria Sally Melville Award Last month you voted, and soon you will learn who the winner of the 2013 Sally Melville Award will be! This Guild member has inspired many knitters throughout the past year, new and old. We will be updating the membership on the winner as soon as possible.

2013 KW Knitters’ Fair: Saturday, September 14th Summer is only just beginning, but the Guild knows that the best event of the season comes in the fall: the Knitters’ Fair! This year we have some big changes, including our location: we are moving to The Aud! Not only does this space provide better parking and transit access, it also has better food selection. We hope that you will enjoy it as much as always. Volunteers from the Guild have been working hard to present this one day event, on Saturday, September 14th from 9:30am to 4:30pm. We have many vendors already signed up and more to come. There is also a fashion show, a speaker, and door prizes. All of these features, including free parking, for only $7.00. Visit the Fair website for more information: www.kwknittersguild.ca/fair. Here you will find a list of Vendors, information for attendees, and directions to the Aud. We hope to see you there in your finest summer knitting and ready to squoosh some yarn!

Fair Volunteers Needed Calling all volunteers! Are you a Guild member interested in attending the Fair and saving the admission cost? Then sign up and volunteer to help out at the event. We will need people for Friday afternoon and evening to help with security. These will be 3 hour shifts (2-5 pm and 5-8 pm). Shifts on Saturday will be 1.5 hours in length and are available in either the morning or the afternoon. Or be a super volunteer and help out both times! Please send an e-mail to Erin McKee ([email protected]) including your name, phone number, and preferred time to volunteer. There will also be a sign-up list available at the May meeting.

Nerd Nite: May 22, 2013 Our own Catherine Williams will be giving a talk at the next Nerd Nite, all about us! Well, at least about knitting. If you are interested in Nerd Nite, or want to show your support and knit in public, the event starts at 7:30pm on Wednesday, May 22nd, at the Rum Runner pub in Kitchener. For more information on Nerd Nite, see their website: www.kw.nerdnite.com.

Waterloo Mini Maker Faire: June 15, 2013 The Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth: a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. And at the Waterloo Maker Faire at Kitchener City Hall, your KW Knitters’ Guild will be showing off what we do best! Please stop by and knit a while, or just say hi!

Excursion to Niagara-on-the-Lake for Kaffe Fasset: October 4, 2013 Mark your calendars! Buy your tickets! The KW Knitters are on the road again! Colour master Kaffe Fasset will be hosted in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake this fall by Bee Modern Fabric and Yarn. We will be organizing car pools to attend the Friday evening lecture. The rally points will be the as for the Frolic trip (the Uptown Waterloo mall parking lot, and Morriston carpool lot), with noon and 4:00pm departures. We are looking into affordable dinner options before the lecture. This will be a payas-you-go event. So buy your tickets online, negotiate the day off work, and start squirrelling away mad money for signed books and all of the colourful products that Kaffe creates for Rowan. Please see Alison at the membership table or email [email protected] to add you name to the list of interested parties. The full-colour listing is on the next page, just to get your interest piqued.

Yarn Search Hello,

I have been working on a complicated knitting project and have run out of the yarn I need to finish. I am looking for James C Brett Rio double knitting yarn, colour number RT9, colour name lilac hue. Do you have this yarn or do you know where I could obtain some? I just need one or two skeins to finish my project. Thank you for your help. Brenda Carson [email protected]

 Yarn Table The yarn table is a great way to get rid of any yarns you don't want anymore, and to make room in the new year for new stash. Just set prices and bring a list of your yarns/quantities/prices with your name on it. Don’t forget to scope out the yarn table for new-to-you bargains, too!

Volunteer Corner There are a couple of open volunteer positions with the Guild, if you are interested in getting involved, but don’t want a large job just yet! We need people to help with the Raffle Table and the Membership Table during Guild meetings. If you are able to help out, please contact Erin McKee, the volunteer coordinator, during a meeting or at [email protected].

Other Stuff The website team is working on a members-only section of the website. In this section, you will be able to find executive meeting minutes, budgets, and year end reports. This information will also be available in a binder at the library. It is important for the members to have access this information, but it is not information that needs to be posted for the general public. All of the information that you are used to seeing on the website—newsletters, meeting information, etc.—will still be publically available.

Newsletter Have you ever wanted to submit a piece to be published in the newsletter? Send any inquiries or entries to [email protected]. All entries must be sub-mitted by 2 weeks before the next Guild meeting date. The next submission deadline will be for the September Newsletter: August 23, 2013. Every time you send something in to be printed in the newsletter, you get a chance to win a gift certificate in May!

I would like to remind everyone to not park in the church parking lot. It is very tiny, many meetings run concurrently with our own, and there is not enough space for everyone. The Town Square lot that is right beside the church is free and spacious. Please park there.
