Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Guild Newsletter
Meeting: Dec 9, 2014 First United Church William & King Streets, Waterloo 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Knit and Chat 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Guild Meeting
A Word from the President Christmas gift knitting. Who can resist. So many beautiful things to knit and so many loved ones to knit for. I did my share of last-week-before-Christmas knit-a-thons! Which is why I swore off knitted Christmas gifts - unless they could be completed by December 1st - or unless I really, really loved the recipient - or ... You get the idea.
Last year I was going to make just one glow in the dark hat for one family member who walked home in the dark along busy streets. But then I started thinking about the other loved ones who also walked home in the dark or who walked a dog late at night in the dark. Before I knew it, I had eight glow in the dark, I Love You hats on the go. Thank goodness we had the ice storm on December 22nd. I had an unplanned day when I could go nowhere but I could knit and do finishing. Everyone on my list got his I Love You hat on Christmas Day.

Communications Update: Guild Governance Reminder Just a reminder that in January, we will be presenting to the Guild a series of motions to update/amend the Constitution and By-Laws of the KW Knitters' Guild.
For December's meeting, members of the Constitution Review Committee will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the changes and process. Please remember that at this point we are not making any revisions to the proposed changes, they have already been written and documented for your review as required by the Constitution's own process, but we are available for discussion and will take note of all feedback for possible future reviews.
All of the information, including full copies of the current and proposed Constitutions and the tabular summary of paragraph-by-paragraph changes, are posted on the web site.
Johanna
Library Just a quick reminder that the library is closed, so books aren't due for return until the January meeting. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and I'll see you in the new year!

Programme This upcoming meeting . as many of you well know, is our guild’s potluck and this year we have some skills tables set up to demonstrate knitting techniques. There will be Q&A about the constitution going on as well. So have fun, eat snacks, maybe learn something new and enjoy yourself.
Some of the skills that will be presented are shown below. For each skill table it would a good idea to bring needles and yarn to learn on.

Membership Update: It was so great to hear Sally Melville talk about the early history of the guild last month and to see all of the seats filled. Did you know that we currently have seven Charter Members who have been part of the guild since the beginning? As of the November meeting, we currently have 143 members. This month is skills night, where guild members go from table to table to teach new techniques and learn from each other. Take advantage of all the years of experience that many of the guild members have, or take a stab at demonstrating something new that you've learned in the past year. For those who don't know me well, I'm a doctoral student at Waterloo, studying the mechanics of fall-related injuries and bicycling safety. Because of my academic interests, I thought I'd share my nerdy obsession with high-tech safety yarn with you for the December Door prize. Schachenmayr Original's Lumio yarn is quick to knit, and comes in a 150 gram skein that's big enough for a slouchy hat and matching pom pom (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lumiohat). Or try the new craze, brioche knitting, with the Infinity Super Chunky Cowl (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/infinity-super-chunky-cowl). I'll be demonstrating some basic brioche stitches at the December meeting.
So what makes this yarn nerdy and special? Along with the three plies of normal yarn, there is also a reflective safety thread that catches the light when you're walking or shoveling the snow in the dark. Not only does this make it a great gift choice for safety-conscious friends and family, it's also the same technology used in many of the labs in my department to study how people move. Don't forget to pick up your door prize ticket on the way in!

Knit and Chat Before the Monthly Knitter's Guild Meeting The hall at First United Church is open to us before our meeting. We can gather to knit and chat from 6:30 on. The membership table and library will be open at 7:00. Our meeting will take place as usual from 7:30 to 9:30.
Parking I would like to remind everyone to not park in the church parking lot. It is very tiny, many meetings run concurrently with our own, and there is not enough space for everyone.
Volunteer Corner Volunteering is a great way to meet fellow members. Opportunities arise from time to time for helping out at a particular meeting or event. If you are able to help out, please contact Erin McKee, the volunteer coordinator, during a meeting or at
[email protected].

Other Stuff The website team is working on a members-only section of the website. In this section, you will be able to find executive meeting minutes, budgets, and year end reports. This information will also be available in a binder at the library. It is important for the members to have access this information, but it is not information that needs to be posted for the general public. All of the information that you are used to seeing on the website—newsletters, meeting information, etc.—will still be publically available.
Newsletter Have you ever wanted to submit a piece to be published in the newsletter? Send any inquiries or entries to
[email protected]. All entries must be submitted by 2 weeks before the next Guild meeting date. The next submission deadline will be for the December Newsletter: December 30, 2014. Every time you send something in to be printed in the newsletter, you get a chance to win a gift certificate in May.

The Town Square lot that is right beside the church is free and spacious. Please park there.

Yarn Table The yarn table is a great way to get rid of any yarns you don't want anymore, and to make room in the new year for new stash. Just set prices and bring a list of your yarns/quantities/prices with your name on it. Don’t forget to scope out the yarn table for new-to-you bargains, too!
Goodwill Do you know of a Guild member with recent news, good or bad? The Guild would like to hear about them, to send our congratulations or our condolences. Please email
[email protected] or speak to any member of the executive with the news of the Guild.
Yarn Table Procedures The purpose of the yarn table is to raise money for the Guild (10% of all sales go to support Guild activities), while at the same time providing an opportunity for members to sell yarn, fibre, knitting books and magazines and other knitting-related items that they are no longer using. In order to make the sale and donation processes easy and transparent for both the volunteers at the yarn table and members selling items, the following procedures have been put in place: Sellers must provide an itemized list with prices and their names. All items must be labeled to correspond to the list. Volunteers use this list to keep track of what has been sold and how much is owed to that particular seller and the Guild. Magazines can be particularly difficult to keep track of as stacks often get mixed up when people sort through them. To help, sellers are asked to include these on the itemized list, but it is not necessary to list each magazine in full detail (i.e. name of magazine, date, etc.). A listing such as Item number/item (magazine)/price is sufficient. Corresponding labeling must also be on each individual magazine. Sellers are asked to price items on a per skein/ball or bag basis. Tiered pricing is difficult for volunteers to manage due to the volume of sales at the yarn table. In fairness to our Local Yarn Stores, the yarn table only accepts items from personal sellers (i.e. not business—retail or re-sellers). The Guild appreciates free or donation items. These can be left at the donation table, rather than the yarn table. The Guild and volunteers are not responsible for lost or damaged items on the yarn sale table. At the end of the evening, sellers must collect their unsold items and any proceeds from the sales. Any uncollected funds or items will be donated to the Guild. It is helpful if sellers have small change to aid in the processing of the 10% of sales going to the Guild. Thank you for making the yarn table a successful fundraising activity for the Guild.

We meet every Thursday from 4-6pm at 7 Shores in Waterloo (on Regina), though to be honest, we are often gone by 520pm. We are a diverse group welcoming of all abilities, walks of life and interests. None among us are master knitters/crocheters, but anything we do know, we are happy to share with someone who asks. We value that it is a small, quiet group and like that there is an openness to people just sitting and chatting. Not everyone feels like knitting for the entire time - or at all! We would encourage anyone interested in joining our group to stop by and check it out! Friday Shall We Knit? from early afternoon until closing in Waterloo. Saturday All Strung Out 1-3 pm at 36 Quebec St., Guelph (226-820-3766).
