Large medal haul for Australia in Asia’s largest wine competition Continuing their success in last year’s competition, Australia has been awarded a total of 528 medals in the Decanter Asia Wine Awards (DAWA) this year. The 2013 edition of the wine competition received more than 2,300 entries from around the world, with a total of 2,023 wines awarded a DAWA medal. The Decanter Asia Wine Awards aims to recognise quality wines and provide consumers across Asia with a trusted source of recommendations. Co-chaired by Jeannie Cho Lee MW, the first Asian Master of Wine and a Contributing Editor to Decanter, and Steven Spurrier, Chairman of the Decanter World Wine Awards and Decanter’s Consultant Editor, judging took place in Hong Kong on 16 -19 September. Over 40 top wine experts from across Asia made up the professional judging panel to rigorously blind taste wines organised in flights to ensure the very best tasting conditions. Winning 11 Regional Trophies in total, Australia has an impressive medal haul in this year’s DAWA. Regional Trophies are given to wines that have been awarded a Gold medal in the initial stage of judging and are recognised as being the best of their region in each style category. Australia was also awarded 18 gold, 100 silver, 270 bronze, and 129 commended medals. “We would like to congratulate all winners in the Decanter Asia Wine Awards,” says Sarah Kemp, Decanter Publishing Director. “All wines were tasted blind and judged by a panel of Asia’s finest palates, and only those which represent outstanding quality are endorsed with a Decanter Asia Wine Award medal.” A special digital edition of Decanter magazine featuring the full list of DAWA 2013 results will be released on 13 November for tablet download at the Apple Newsstand and all major digital platforms. The DAWA 2013 results can also be found on DecanterChina.com (www.decanterchina.com), Decanter’s bilingual Simplified Chinese and English website containing bespoke content for the growing audience of wine lovers in China.
