Top winners in Asia’s largest wine competition announced at ProWine China, Shanghai 15 wines have taken the top honour of the International Trophy in the Decanter Asia Wine Awards this year. The 2013 edition of the wine competition received more than 2,300 entries from around the world, with a total of 2,023 medal winners. The Decanter Asia Wine Awards aims to recognise quality wines and provide consumers across Asia with a trusted source of recommendations. Co-chaired by Jeannie Cho Lee MW, the first Asian Master of Wine and a Contributing Editor to Decanter, and Steven Spurrier, Chairman of the Decanter World Wine Awards and Decanter’s Consultant Editor, judging took place in Hong Kong on 16 -19 September. Over 40 top wine experts from across Asia made up the professional judging panel to rigorously blind taste wines organised in flights to ensure the very best tasting conditions. The International Trophy winners of the DAWA 2013 were revealed at Decanter’s stand at ProWine China, Shanghai, on 13 November. Winners include wines from Argentina, Australia, France, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, and the USA. The International Trophy is the highest award given out in the competition, and is followed by the Regional Trophy, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Commended medals. “We are proud to announce this year’s International Trophy winners – DAWA’s ultimate accolade,” says Sarah Kemp, Decanter Publishing Director. “They represent outstanding quality and I believe consumers will be able to discover new and exciting wines through our awards.” Lance Bradfield, managing director of The New Holland Wine Co and representing Zonte’s Footsteps, the winner of Best Single Red Varietal International Trophy, said awards count for more in China's emerging wine market than in some other countries. 'The Chinese place a lot of emphasis on awards. It means credibility and cudos.' Steven Wasylyk, brand director of artisan wines at ASC Fine Wines, collected the trophy for Napa's Cakebread Cellars, and said of Californian wines in China, 'a lot of connoisseurs are already drinking more. It used to be quite niche, but people are going more for it and there's a lot of potential in terms of value for money'. A special digital edition of Decanter magazine featuring the full list of DAWA 2013 results is now released and available for tablet download at the Apple Newsstand and all major digital platforms. The DAWA 2013 results can also be found on DecanterChina.com (www.decanterchina.com), Decanter’s bilingual Simplified Chinese and English website containing bespoke content for the growing audience of wine lovers in China.
