This job description may be amended at any appropriate time, following a period of consultation with the employee. It will be reviewed annually in conjunction with the appraisal process and planning for the next academic year.
Core Purpose of Post: The caretaker is responsible for: The security of the school premises Maintaining the internal and external fabric of the school premises in order that it remains a safe working environment Supervising the cleaners and the cleansing service of the school Maintaining any machinery or plant within the school Liaising daily with the Office Manager and Headteacher with regards to caretaking issues To contribute to the development of the academy by supporting the following area(s): TBC
Duties and Responsibilities - Specific: Site Security The caretaker will: Undertake the responsibility of key holder Implement a comprehensive locking and unlocking procedure in order that the school premises, including outbuildings, is accessible for authorised use by children, staff and visitors and/or secure when the school is not in use; the procedure must include: The unlocking and securing of doors and windows The turning off and turning on of the intruder alarm The turning on and switching off of electrical equipment, lights and heating The opening and closing of blinds/curtains A visual check of the school site Checking for the smell of gas and checking that all master gas controls are turned off Provide access to the building, where this is required, for external parties, such as contractors and person(s) letting the premises Take reasonable steps to deter trespass on school premises; also, take action when it is suspected that an intruder may be on the premises when the school is closed for business i.e. contact the Police Attend the site, where possible, when contacted by the intruder alarm company or the Headteacher as a result of concerns about site security; enter the building when it is deemed safe to do so and ensure that the building and the site are secure, following the guidance in the Key Holders Information Pack Heating The caretaker will: Exercise responsibility for the operation of the school heating system
Ensure that all plant and equipment operates at the maximum efficiency and economy, with special regards to energy conservation. Regularly inspect heating-related equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition and immediately notify the nominated sub-contractor of any faults
Cleaning The caretaker will: Ensure that the whole school is clean, using approved and appropriate equipment, materials and products, carrying out cleaning work in designated areas (where applicable) Supervise the cleaning staff on a daily basis to ensure that the school is cleaned; monitor the effectiveness of the cleaning team and advise the Office Manager and/or Headteacher of any concerns Ensure that the playground, paths and external areas are kept clean and tidy of leaves, litter etc. and all drains and gullies are kept clear and free flowing; ensure external bins are emptied regularly Assist with the ordering of all required stock, in line with the Academy’s financial policies and procedures, so that the school can be cleaned and replenished of day-to-day items e.g. paper towels, soap and toilet paper; avoiding shortages accordingly On delivery of ordered items, check the delivery immediately against the delivery note and original order (in line with Academy policy and procedure) and then store appropriately Ensure that all cleaning and caretaking equipment is clean and in good working order and that the storage areas of the premises staff are kept clean and tidy Buildings Maintenance (including Health and Safety) The caretaker will: Draw to the attention of the Headteacher any repairs/maintenance work (outside of regular day-to-day tasks); await a response from the Headteacher with regards to taking action once such work is reported, including if there is financial implication Liaise with contractors and escort them to their place of work on site at the request of the Office Manager and/or Headteacher; monitor their work and report any concerns to the Office Manager and/or Headteacher Undertake a reasonable range of handyperson type duties, as mutually agreed with the Office Manager and/or Headteacher, having due regard for the day-to-day maintenance of the premises, as well as fixtures, fittings and furnishings Organise the required buildings inspections, checks, services and maintenance in accordance with the Academy’s Inspection Record and on an ad hoc basis as required; also, update the Record with the Headteacher regularly in order that it is reflective of the current situation Carry out all required health and safety tasks and checks and make relevant records, taking appropriate action should a safety risk be highlighted Carry out the first line monitoring of any contracts that may be in force Ensure that the school site is safe and clear of hazardous materials and equipment Ensure that only appropriate and identified areas in the school are used for storage of cleaning and maintenance items, materials and tools; ensure that the Boiler Room is not used for storage Provide safe access to the school for children, parents/carers, staff and visitors in the event of inclement weather Ensure that all required policies and procedures are followed with regards to Asbestos Other The caretaker will: Be responsible for carrying out clerical duties in relation to the job Take delivery of stores, goods, and equipment and distribute as appropriate throughout the establishment Adhere to the reasonable direction and instruction given by senior leaders Seek agreement from the Headteacher, if s/he considers there is a need to work additional hours in order to complete tasks in the event of an unplanned/unexpected occurrence Complete time sheets on a monthly basis for previously agreed overtime worked Carry out lettings duties as required (with appropriate notice) Carry out porterage duties as required Be flexible when managing his/her time and duties during his/her working hours, in order to ensure the
smooth running of the school Carry out general tasks in order to support colleagues and visitors prepare for events and activities e.g. setting up chairs for parents/carers’ assemblies
