Lewisham Rider Summer 2016
A Cycling Strategy for Lewisham A clearly defined strategy for cycling is absolutely necessary if a local authority is to demonstrate a meaningful commitment to sustainable travel policies that can actually be delivered. We have been working hard in the last few months, with the support of the borough’s cycling champion, Councillor Mark Ingleby, to produce a draft for just such a strategy,
Embankment cycleway. How about this on the A21! which is now available for discussion and comment. It has been circulated via our e lists, and website and we are welcoming feedback.
Across central London, there is now a basic network of decent infrastructure, with the new superhighways at Vauxhall, along the Embankment and from Elephant to Blackfriars looking and feeling pretty good to ride. Its time now to look a little further out, to boroughs like ours, analyse what needs to be done to get more people choosing cycling, and develop a plan to achieve that. So, please take a look at the draft strategy and do comment.
Quietway 1. Finished. At last!
Well, it should be, by the time you read this. As this newsletter is being typed, finishing touches are being put to the Trundleys Rd crossing and Edward St in Deptford will soon have a short stretch of segregated cycle track. Join our infrastructure ride on Sunday 12th June, when we will lead people along it, as well as the rest of the new cycle tracks in Central London and Vauxhall.

Bike Week
Ride of the Season
This year, Bike Week is from the 11th to 19th June. This year’s Bike Week has a special focus and will encourage people to use their bikes to cycle to work. We’ll be running a couple of extra weekday evening rides. Check our rides calendar. However, for us, Bike week doesn’t just last seven days. We have been helping people get to work already this year, running a buddy ride scheme where we pair new bicycle commuters with more experienced riders to offer support and guidance and on some Wednesdays, adding a Lewisham leg to the Southwark Bike Train which has been operating along the cycle route from Catford to Blackfriars, picking up at the stations on that line. If you want more information, about this contact us.
Tough choice! We have already had some cracking rides. We’ve been to the seaside three times, Hertfordshire, Kent, plus a whole load of local London rides. But two rides spring to mind. The first, a lovely family ride from Deptford along the Waterlink Way. Nearly four hours of fun, riding, park playing and coffee drinking and not one complaint of boredom from any of us, including the adults. And the first time I’ve seen a two year old pedaling a tandem!
Downham 90 Past Present Future Community Parade
Summer is on its way and Lewisham Cyclists has already begun showing up at local fairs and park. We ran a successful Dr Bike in Deptford Park, and hope to do more there. The Downham Parade and Fair in Forster Park was great fun, if hard work for us! We pedaled bicycle powered floats from St Johns Church on Bromley Rd all the way up to the fair in the park. Locals will know that involves a fair sized hill! I had the privilege of transporting lovely, local lollipop lady, Mary Bennett and Councillor Ingleby rode the Conisborough College float. Looking forward to this event next year. We’ll be attending more local fairs, with Councillor Ingleby pedaling our Dr Bike stall, so watch our hard! calendar.
Another great ride was our jaunt to Folkestone from Ashford via Dungeness. Miles of sea front riding on a gloriously sunny day. And a tailwind. What more can any cyclists ask?
