Our  Summer  of  Cycling

Phew!    It’s  been  a  busy  summer.    From  Space4Cycling  campaigning  events  in  Ladywell   Fields,  to  city  rides,  park  rides  and  jaunts  that  took  us  out  of  London,  then  miles  into  the   Kentish  countryside,  on  occasions  as  far  as  the  sea  and  back,    we  have  run  a  varied   programme  of  activities  this  summer.    Highlights  for  me  were  the  East  London  Anarchist   history  ride,  which  was  almost  as  entertaining  and  interesting  to  research    as    it  was  to   lead  and  the  ride  to  the  Shipwright’s  Arms,  the  long  way  round.    It’s  a  ride  that  lets  you   experience  the  whole  of  Kent,  from  its  steep,  wooded  ascents  and  wide,  flat  river  flood   plains  through  to  its  marshlands,  mudflats  and  beaches.    Not  forgetting  its  old,   atmospheric  country   pubs.       All  that  in  one  ride.          Just  two  rides  out   of  many.    And  we   won’t  stop  riding  as   autumn  approaches,   not  even  in  the     winter  months.    The   only  weather  that   stops  us  is  ice.  Just   too  unsafe.    So  keep   checking  our  rides   calendar  on  our   website…there  will   be  at  least  one  ride  a   week,  usually   Lewisham Cyclists South East London Parks Ride: Wells Park more,  including  an   occasional  Tuesday  Totter,  our  newest  ride,  a  short  ten  miles  or  so  after  work  on  every   other  Tuesday  evening,  ending  at  a  convenient  pub  for  a  social  chat  and  drink.    All  year   round.

Looking  Forward   We  are  hoping  to  expand  the  work  we  do  in   the  community  next  year.      Lewisham  lacks   a  good  drop-‐in  bike  maintenance  workshop   where  people  can  bring  their  bikes,  have   access  to  a  range  of  good  tools  to  work  on   their  bikes  with  help  and  advice  from  a   mechanic  and  other  Lewisham  residents   who  know  a  bit  about  bikes.    There  are  a   Hoping to fund a proper maintenance workshop for next year! few  in  other  areas  of  London  and  we  are   hoping  to  raise  enough  money  over  the  next     year   to  begin  funding  just  such  a  facility  in  our  borough.    We  will  be  running  jumble  sales,   offering  buddy  rides  to  help  people  begin  commuting  to  work  and  offering  some  cycle   training  from  a  qualified  instructor,  all  for  donations  to  our  fund  for  this  project.    If  you  are   interested,  or  maybe  want  to  get  involved,  do  get  in  touch.
