Little Hustle and Hustle “JV” 2015-16 Coaching Guidelines Mission Statement: To provide an environment in which the players learn, play and enjoy the game of basketball.
Please keep in mind this is a recreational league. It is fine for the kids to compete and try to win, but nobody is going to win the NBA title here. Keep the emphasis on fun and learning. Playing Time / Positions
Each player that attends a game is guaranteed minimum playing time! o The minimum playing time per player is 2 quarters.
Playing time should be equalized as much as possible over the course of the season. o When fewer than 10 players are present for a game, some players may be given more playing time than others in that game, but the same players should not always get the extra playing time every game. o Although it is not necessary to equalize playing time in every game, it is expected that playing will be roughly equalized over the course of the season. o You are allowed as many substitutions as needed during the course of the game to equalize playing time. If you substitute 3 or more players at one time, coaches should line up players at the centerline to allow players to match up. All players should be given several opportunities to play each position in games throughout the season.
You should emphasize giving players ample opportunity to play their off-positions during practice.
Fouls / Aggressive Defense
We do emphasize teaching aggressive defense, but this does not mean fouls are overlooked.
It is your responsibility as coaches to work with your players and teach them how to play tight defense without fouling. Flagrant fouling must be kept in control – we expect the coaches and refs to work with us to help keep this in check.
Blowout Control
Coaches have to help us keep the score from getting very lopsided. This angers the parents, is detrimental to the league and, worst of all, it hurts the kids. When your team enjoys a comfortable lead – please substitute liberally!

Play your better players at their off-positions when you have a large lead!
Refs will be expected to call a tighter game against a team that has a large lead.
Encourage your players to focus on running their offense and taking their time.
Coaching Points
Coaches must remain off the floor during play!
Each team is allowed 3 time outs per game (other than for injury).
Coaches are allowed unlimited substitutions and refs will call injury time outs when a player is injured. Please avoid negative comments to your players from the sideline! Keep sideline coaching positive: calm, instructive, and encouraging.
Some teams will have to share a gym for practice. Most of your gym time will be alone, but please be respectful during the overlap period. You are also welcome to contact other teams and share gym time as well as conduct scrimmages.
Crank the adjustable goals up and down slowly to avoid stripping the thread. If you are the last team in the gym for the night, return the goals to 10 foot. Always put the crank hook back where you found it after each use so the next coach can find it. Work with your players on fundamentals. Developing their ball handling skills will give you the biggest payback. Proper defensive position rebounding, blocking out, turning to face the basket after receiving a pass; all these need a lot of emphasis.
Please keep in mind this is a recreational league. It is fine for the kids to compete and try to win, but nobody is going to win the NBA title here. Keep the emphasis on fun and learning. Please remember that at all times, we are guests in the gyms. We ask for the coaches’ help in making sure players are kept out of other areas of the schools and are prevented from doing anything that might cause injury to themselves or others and from damaging school property. Ask your parents to keep track of nonparticipating siblings for the same reason.
Try to teach your players to know the Number Offense! Each grade level can be expected to know and practice progressively more. o Grade 1: At a minimum, teach the players to know the numbers of the positions, know what number they are when they are in the game and at least set up in the correct position when they bring the ball up the floor. This gets them in good starting position and helps to spread the floor. o Grades 2 and 3: Should attempt to run a few simple plays, should always attempt to run a play to start the half court offense. o Grades 4-6: Can learn more plays, more involved plays, should bring the ball back out to set up a new play when the offense becomes unstructured.

o Please use this as the basis of your offense, but if you can teach more than this and your players can grasp it and execute it, please do! There are many ways you can expand the basic offense. o All grades should be taught simple inbounds play or two, the “stack” and the “box” plays are two good examples.
Referees: If you have any issues during the game regarding the officiating, please talk to the referees between quarters, at halftime or after the game. Remember, most of these referees are kids and are learning.
Modified Rules 1. 2.
3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
No Back Court Defense (No Full Court Press). Technical Fouls can be assessed after the third offense (referee discretion).
Grades 1-4: No steals off the dribble behind the volleyball line (line across the court just beyond the top of the 3-point arc). Defender may guard closely and steal a loose ball or pass, but stealing the dribble will be called an illegal steal and give the ball out to the offense. This will give the guards a “safe zone” where they can start a half court offense. Offense should cross half court before starting their offensive set. No stalling allowed by the offense at the end of a game. Referees are allowed to call a “five second” violation if the offense is judged to be stalling in the last two minutes of a game. Grades 1-4 will also use a modified free throw line. Rim Height: 1st grade will play on 8½ foot baskets, grades 2-4 on 9 foot baskets. The free throw line is 18 inches closer than regulation.
No Zone Defense!! (No spreading the floor on offense to create a 1-on-1 situation.) No Double Teaming outside the paint and low post. You can only double team a player with the ball in the 3 second lane and/or low post area.
Games will consist of four 8-minute quarters with a running clock. The clock will be stopped for: timeouts, injuries, shooting fouls and the last 2 minutes of the 4 th quarter when the game score is a 10 point differential or less. 10 seconds to get the ball over the center time line. Each team will be given warnings before causing a turnover. You cannot set up your offense from the back court. No 3 second rule in the paint. However, refs will encourage offensive players to move and not allow them to “camp” in the 3-second lane. No over and back rule. The floor is too short to enforce this rule.
10. Individual/Team Fouls – Each player will be allowed 3 fouls per half and 5 per game. After 3 fouls in a half, that player must sit until the next half. A player receiving a 5th foul must sit out the remainder of the game. Teams will shoot a twoshot foul on and after the fifth team foul per half. 11. Intentional/Breakaway Fouls – At referee’s discretion, may call a two-shot foul.

12. Flagrant Foul – At referee’s discretion, if referee feels that a foul is excessive, violent and/or dangerous, two-shot foul plus possession for the team fouled. Also, player committing flagrant foul must be substituted out of the game, player may reenter at the coach’s discretion. A second flagrant foul committed by the same player in the same game will result in disqualification for the remainder of the game and must be reported to the league director. Modified Rules: Grades 5-6 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
Back court man to man defense is allowed in the last 2 minutes of the 2 nd and 4th quarters. There will be no back court defense allowed when a team has an advantage of 8 points or more. 10 foot rims will be used for 5th and 6th grades. Regulation foul line will be used.
Regular rules enforced; 3-seconds in the paint, 10-seconds in the back court, over and back, 5 seconds to inbound the ball. No safety zone in the front court, regular defense allowed at half-court.
No Zone Defense!! (No spreading the floor on offense to create a 1-on-1 situation.) Each team will be allowed 3 timeouts per game.
At these grade levels, we are trying to get away from lining up the players at the beginning of each half and quarter. The boys need to learn how to match up and the coaches can make adjustments.
Teams reach the 1 and 1 bonus after the other teams 7th team foul. The double bonus (2 free throws) occurs on and after the 10th team foul.
10. Players have 5 fouls per game. They are not subject to 3 per half.
