LSC SOFTBALL

Angelo State remained undefeated in Lone Star Conference play with its third straight sweep to improve to 25-3 overall and 9-0 in the LSC. Tarleton State is right behind them with just one loss for an 8-1 league record. LSC teams are playing a single round-robin schedule with a three-game series against every other team. Each series consists of a doubleheader one day and single 7-inning game the other day. The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into the NCAA postseason. The single-elimination championship will be played April 27-28 in Denton, Texas. LSC softball teams are 165-112 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 85-50 overall including 46-22 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 17-9 opposed to the Great American Conference, 19-13 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and 3-6 versus independent teams.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK HITTER

Katie Welborn, Tarleton State University, SR, INF, North Richland Hills, Texas, Birdville HS Welborn was a force at the plate all week for the Tarleton TexAnns, who split a doubleheader with St. Mary’s and won their third straight conference series with a 2-1 series victory over Abilene Christian. Welborn had 12 official at-bats in five games last week and recorded hits in nine of the them for a .750 batting average. The senior slugger belted five home runs, including two in the nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader against ACU. She slugged 2.167, had 26 total bases and drove in eight RBIs while being pitched around to the tune of eight walks - including four intentional passes in Saturday’s game against ACU. 

PITCHERS Briana Sanchez, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, RHP, San Antonio, Texas, Marshall HS The Cardinals went 5-0 during the week and Sanchez won three of those games. She allowed but two runs over her 18 innings pitched with two complete games including a 5-inning run rule. In her third and final start she worked six scoreless innings before giving way to a relief pitcher in the final frame. Sanchez averaged a strikeout per inning with 18 strikeouts. She posted a .078 ERA and .095 batting average against for the week to improve to 10-4 this season. Claire Molina, Angelo State University, SR, Pitcher, San Bernardino, Calif., Colton HS Against one of the top offensive teams in the conference, Molina held Midwestern State to a .122 team batting average, allowing just six hits in 14.0 innings pitched. The senior threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout in Game 2 of the series. She struck out seven en route to a 5-0 victory. The San Bernardino, Calif., native toed the rubber on Sunday for the final game of the series were she recorded eight strikeouts and held the Mustangs to just four hits in the Belles 7-4 victory. Molina is now 14-2 on the season, which is the most wins by any players in the LSC.  

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Renee Erwin, West Texas A&M University, started to hit her stride offensively for the #19 Lady Buffs this past week as she went 11-of-16 at the plate with two doubles, four triples and two homeruns to drive in 13 RBI with an on-base percentage of .750 and a slugging percentage of 1.688. In a doubleheader win against Adams State in Canyon last Tuesday, Erwin went 6-of-7 at the plate with three triples and a homerun to drive in eight RBI with 15 total bases.  Bailey Vrazel, Texas Woman’s University, helped the team to three wins with a team-best .571 batting average. She was perfect 6-for-6 in steals and leads the team and LSC with 42 on the season. Vrazel drove in seven runs from the lead-off spot including the game-winning run in a 4-2 win over Cameron. She has reached base in all 28 games this season and had at least one hit in 25 games.  Lea Padilla, University of the Incarnate Word, batted .500 with 8-16 in a week when UIW went 5-0. Those eight hits included three doubles and a pair of home runs. She raised her batting average 43 points in the week. The two home runs tied her for the team lead and the 10 RBI vaulted her into the team lead, nearly double the next player. Also, she is now second on the UIW all-time list in both home runs and runs batted in.  Lindsey Brown, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, regained her form at the plate last week blasting a pair of home runs and driving in six runs. She started the week with a two-run homer in a win over Ohio Dominican. Over the weekend, she went 5-for-8 with a double, home run, three runs and four RBI’s against #19 West Texas A&M. She drove in two runs and pitched a complete game victory in the opening 5-2 win over WT. In the final game of the series, she hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth to send the game to extra innings. She was intentionally walked in the eighth inning to prevent her from having a chance to tie the game up. She hit .462 with a .588 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.  Kimberly Briggs, Abilene Christian University, raised her season home run total to six after blasting four shots through five games last week vs. St. Mary’s and Tarleton State. Briggs’ first round-tripper of the week tied St. Mary’s at 6-6 in game one of a doubleheader. ACU trailed by as many as five runs to the rattlers, but scored four runs in the fifth before Briggs tied it on one swing in the sixth. She hit her final three home runs over the last two games vs. the TexAnns, first slugging a game-tying home run in the fifth inning of game two,

LONE STAR CONFERENCE SOFTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE and then in game three she went 3 for 4 with a pair of two-run jacks that gave ACU leads of 2-0 and 4-0. Briggs’ efforts lifted her team-best batting average to .412. She also leads ACU with 27 RBI.  Lauren Smith, Angelo State University, went 3-for-8 (.375) to help lead the Rambelles to series sweep over Midwestern State this past weekend. With the sweep, ASU is now 9-0 in league play and have sole possession of first place. Smith’s big hit came in Game 1, when ASU trailed 1-0 entering the fifth inning. The junior stepped in the box and laced a three-run home run over the left-field wall which proved to be the game winner. During the weekend, the Waxahachie native slugged .750 with four RBIs and a .444 on-base percentage.   Melanie Alderette, Eastern New Mexico University, led the Zias on the week as she led the team in most offensive categories. She produced the highest overall batting average and on base percentage for players with at least seven at bats, and tied for a team-high in hits and RBIs. In addition, Alderette swiped two stolen bases as she approaches the Zias career record. Alderette’s effectiveness in the leadoff spot is highlighted by her .438 OB%, and ability to consistently get on base for the Zias.   Larisa Garcia, Texas Woman’s University, pitched two complete games last week including a shutout against Cameron. She also picked up a save on Friday to lead the team, LSC and NCAA Division II with six saves on the season. Garcia struck out 17 batters in 17.1 innings. On the season she has pitched three complete-game shutouts and struck out 85 batters.   Samantha Swanda, Tarleton State University, was the best pitcher on the Tarleton staff again this week, posting a team-best 3.63 ERA and 15 strikeouts while leading the TexAnns to another conference series win with a complete-game victory over ACU Friday.  Amy Smith, Eastern New Mexico University, was the Zias statistical pitching leader this week. After facing two tough Adams State and Incarnate Word teams, Smith posted a 4.26 era in a team-high 23 innings pitched while fanning 15 batters. Smith also picked up the start in all five Zia games, and threw a complete game in the finale Incarnate Word.  

LSC NOTES (Submitted by LSC SID’s) Abilene Christian

The Wildcats went 3-2 last week, which began with a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary’s followed by a series loss at Tarleton State. Both of ACU’s wins over the Rattlers came in walk-off fashion. Sara Vaughn singled in the game-winning run in game two’s 2-1 victory, and reached on a bases-loaded error to end game one. The Wildcats trailed by as many as five runs in the first game to St. Mary’s, but scored six times over the final three innings. Kimberly Briggs and Kara Stutesman each delivered game-tying home runs in their sweep of the Rattlers. ACU lost back-to-back games for the first time this year last Friday after dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Tarleton State. After getting beat 7-1 in the first game, ACU came back in game two from a four-run deficit thanks to another home run to Briggs only to see the TexAnns retake the lead for good in the fifth on a two-run home run. The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game three vs. the TexAnns paced by a pair of two-run home runs by Briggs and a solo shot from Courtney Flanary. Peyton Mosley led the ACU pitching staff with two wins, seven strikeouts, and a 1.11 ERA. She came within one out of a shutout in game three at Tarleton State, but a two-out error made by the centerfielder plated two unearned runs. The Wildcats play at St. Mary’s Wednesday before

coming home to host Texas A&M-Kingsville. 

Angelo State The nationally-ranked Rambelles swept Midwestern State this past weekend marking their third consecutive Lone Star Conference sweep. The Belles are 25-3 on the year and now 9-0 in league play, which gives them sole possession of first place. Angelo State held Midwestern State’s high-powered offense to just five runs in three games, limiting them to a .167 team batting average.

Eastern New Mexico Last week Eastern New Mexico faced off against Adams State before beginning their series with Incarnate Word. The Zias were winless last week and will be looking to snap their eight game skid against Texas Woman’s this weekend. 

Incarnate Word The Cardinals went 5-0 for the week and that is the longest winning string of the year. It also upped UIW’s season mark to 17-9. The final three games were wins over Eastern New Mexico as the Cardinals opened their Lone Star Conference schedule. The week featured a combination of hitting and pitching. As a team UIW hit .367 for the week including 13 of the 47 hits being for extra bases. Cardinals pitchers went 33 innings allowing but four earned runs and an ERA of 1.09. The individual leaders were Lea Padilla at the plate with an average of .500 and two home runs and 10 RBI. In the circle Briana Sanchez was 3-0 with an ERA of 1.00. She struck out 18 in 18 innings. Next up for Incarnate Word is a weekend LSC series at Midwestern State. 

2 time. She has raised her average to .289 after going 11-for-23 in her last 11 games. Kaylee Villanueva has hit safely in 14 of her last 16 games. Her batting average has been very consistent all year long. Since Feb. 21, her batting has not wavered much going as high as .358 and as low as .324. The team travels to UH-Victoria on Tuesday for a doubleheader. It is the first ever meeting between the two teams. This weekend, the team goes to #24 Abilene Christian for a three-game series.

West Texas A&M The #19 Lady Buffs went 4-1 this past week as they swept Adams State in doubleheader action before taking two of three games from the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville at Hubert Field in Kingsville, Texas. WT was led offensively by freshman Renee Erwin who went 11-of-16 at the plate with two doubles, four triples and two homeruns to drive in 13 RBI to hit .688 on the week with a 1.688 slugging percentage. Lady Buff senior Marci Womack became the all-time leader in strikeouts in West Texas A&M history on Saturday afternoon with her 505th career strikeout. WT hosts Emporia State on Wednesday afternoon in doubleheader action before the Belles of Angelo State come to town for Military Appreciation Weekend at Lady Buff Yard in Canyon.

Tarleton State Tarleton State went 3-2 this past week. After splitting a non-conference doubleheader with St. Mary’s Tuesday, the TexAnns won their third straight LSC series by sweeping Friday’s doubleheader against No. 24 Abilene Christian. The series sweep attempt fell short with a loss Saturday, however.

Texas A&M-Kingsville The Javelinas went 3-2 during the week. They swept a pair of games from visiting Ohio Dominican, 9-1 and 2-1 on Wednesday.
