Incarnate Word

Angelo State Akins emerging: Angelo State sophomore wide out CJ Akins caught seven passes for 129 yards against Abilene Christian, the second time the Harker Heights, Texas native has surpassed the century mark in the past three games. Akins found the end zone on a 12-yard pass from Josh Neiswander in the fourth quarter and made several nifty catches during the game. There’s a catch: There were plenty of catches to go around as Neiswander completed a school-record 33 passes Saturday. The Rams had double-digit receivers for the third consecutive game as 10 different players caught passes. Akins and Dakarai Pecikonis led the ASU air attack with seven catches each and V’Keon Lacey finished with six grabs. Blocked: Abilene Christian blocked a Jacob Decker field goal try in the third quarter nearly seven minutes after blocking a point after try. Three Ram kickers have combined to go 4-for-11 on field goal tries and have had four kicks blocked. One step forward, two steps back: Angelo State was held to minus-23 yards rushing, the fewest yards rushing by an ASU team since Sept. 14, 2002, a minus-45 effort in a 38-0 seasonopening loss to Tarleton State. Neiswander still going: Neiswander broke his own single game completions record (33) while surpassing Ned Cox for ASU’s career completions record. The senior quarterback needs 377 yards with two games remaining to reach Cox for the ASU career yardage mark. Neiswander also has 52 career touchdowns and is within four of reaching Cox at the top of that list. Neiswander broke five single-season records in 2009 and could have his name at the top of every ASU passing list by the end of the 2010 campaign.

While Incarnate Word dropped its third consecutive game in the South Division, the Cardinals can find a small bright spot in that UIW has run the gauntlet and is done with playing team ranked among the nation’s best. As Coach Mike Santiago put it, “we have weathered the storm. The roof may be partially off and there is damage from the storm, the foundation is solid and we will work on repairing the damage.” Against West Texas A&M, the Cardinals yielded the game’s first 42 points creating am impossible hill to climb. Offensively for UIW, sophomore quarterback Paden Lynch played the entire game--the first time this season any UIW QB has done that. He was the game’s leading rusher with 84 net yards on 12 carries. He finished 18-31-1 passing for 126 yards and one TD. Defensively, UIW held WTAMU to 111 yards below its total offensive average and 174 yards below its passing yards average. On defense, sophomore safety Chaz Pavliska, questionable with back and hamstring problems, led the Cardinals with a school-record-tying 12 tackles.

Midwestern State

Injury-plagued Central Oklahoma dropped its fourth straight game with a 31-30 home loss to Texas A&M-Commerce . . . It was the third one-point loss of the season for the Bronchos, who missed the tying extra point with 1:26 left to play . . . UCO earlier missed PATs in overtime losses to Incarnate Word (42-41) and Southeastern Oklahoma (56-55) . . . The Bronchos, who have lost three starting offensive linemen to injury this year, played without starting quarterback Ethan Sharp . . . Sharp, who has thrown for 1,936 yards and 19 touchdowns, was held out with a concussion as redshirt freshman Landon Greve got his first career start and went the distance . . . Greve hit 16-of-22 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown, but the Bronchos were held to a season-low 260 yards . . . Running back Josh Birmingham was limited to a season-low 55 yards rushing, through he still scored two touchdowns for the eighth straight game with runs of two and three yards . . . Birmingham also had four receptions for 72 yards, making catches of 14 and 38 yards to key a 99-yard TD drive late in the game that got UCO within a point . . . Birmingham moved into 21st place on UCO’s single-season rushing list with 1,056 yards and he climbed into ninth place in all-purpose yards with 1,427 . . . Sophomore cornerback Creadell Pennon had a big game against A&M-C with eight tackles, a sack that resulted in a fumble UCO recovered for a touchdown and an interception and 41-yard return that led to another TD.

Northeastern State’s 3-game winning streak came to a halt in Ada as East Central rolled to a 48-21 win in LSC North action. The RiverHawks can still win the LSC North, but no longer completely controls its own destiny. Northeastern State needs a win over Eastern New Mexico this week to clinch at least a tie for the LSC North crown. A loss to ENMU, coupled with a Texas A&M-Commerce victory over East Central would mean a 3-way tie for the LSC North championship. The RiverHawks gave up 28 points in each half as ECU scored two defensive touchdowns and a pair of safeties in the rout. Northeastern State had only 28 rushing yards and 218 total yards in the loss. The RiverHawks are 5-4 overall, 5-3 in the LSC and 4-1 in the LSC North.

Tarleton had 218 yards on the ground and 226 yards through the air while the Mustangs had 187 yards rushing and 175 passing. THIS SEASON: The Texans are 2-7 on the season and 1-4 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. For the second straight week, the Texans almost defeated a Top 25 team in the nation. Tarleton is averaging 331.4 yards of total offense, including 110.1 yards on the ground and 221.3 yards through the air. The defense is allowing 396.8 yards, including 146.3 yards rushing and 250.4 yards passing. The Texans are being outscored 34.1 to 20.6. Tarleton is converting on just 77 percent of its red zone chances while allowing 90 percent. Evan Robertson, who needed just three yards Saturday for 100 yards, leads the team with 158 attempts for 634 yards and four touchdowns. Regal is second with 56 carries for 258 yards and four scores. Stephens is 102-of-203 for 1,431 yards and eight touchdowns. He has thrown for eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Frye leads the receiving corps with 42 catches for 692 yards and six touchdowns. Devon Gray is second with 24 receptions for 198 yards and two scores. Jamal Steamer tops the squad with 10 tackles for loss for minus-43 yards, including a team-high five sacks for minus-26 yards. Tarleton has 56 tackles for loss, including 12 sacks. They have intercepted five passes with 30 pass break-ups and 15 quarterback hurries. THIS WEEK: The Texans return home for the final two games of the season, this week hosting Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. The meeting will be the first for the two schools on the gridiron.

Texas A&M-Commerce The Lions’ 31-30 win over Central Oklahoma was the Lions’ first win in Edmond since 1992, when A&M-Commerce posted a 26-9 win. It is the first win by an A&MCommerce team in Edmond since the Lions’ volleyball team won there on Nov. 1, 2008. Since that match, Lion athletics had lost in its previous seven trips to Edmond. The seven trips consisted of four basketball games, two soccer games and a football game. A&M-Commerce has not defeated East Central at home in Commerce since a 42-0 shutout win over the Tigers in 1990. Senior quarterback Adam Farkes averaged 7.3 yards per pass attempt, a season-best for the Boston, Massachusetts native. With two games to play, Farkes’ 309 attempts ranks fourthall-time (1. Buster Faulkner-409; 2. Adam Farkes-336; 3. Royce Slechta-352). His 1,632 yards passing which ranks 16th-best all-time in a single-season. A&MCommerce held the ball 6:22 more than UCO, its second largest differential on the season. The longest was when the Lions had it 9:46 more than Angelo State. Sophomore running back London Hamilton became the third different Lions’ ball carrier to score two touchdowns in a game. He joins teammates Jamar Mosely and Marcus Graham on a two-touchdown game. The last time that A&M-Commerce had three players score two touchdowns in a game during a season was in 2000 when Jason Coffey, Will Shaw and Ronnie Humphrey each scored twice. Freshman Cameron Frosch had to punt the ball just four times – a season-low – against Central Oklahoma. Coming into the UCO game, A&M-Commerce had converted just 26.2% of its third downs before converting a season-best 55% (11 for 20) of its third down efforts against the Bronchos. Furthermore, the Lions are 7-for-8 over the last four games on fourth down after starting the season 3-for-10. Senior A.J. Billings picked off his third pass of the season and the seventh of his career. The last Lions player to have three interceptions in a season was in 2008 when Kurt Rossum had four picks and teammates Andrew Gamboa and Courtney Edmond each had three.

rushing in a game. The Javelinas had 11 different players carry the ball at least once and six players gained at least 14 yards on the ground. The team also gained six rushing touchdowns after entering the game with only 10 rushing touchdowns on the season. Wonderful Woodson Sophomore running back Jonathon Woodson is quickly becoming one of the top running backs in the Lone Star Conference South Division. On Saturday, he put together one of the best offensive halves in school history. Woodson scored four touchdowns and gained 187 all-purpose yards in only 30 minutes of action. He opened the game by scoring on a 3-yard run on the team’s first drive. Later in the first quarter, he carried four times for 32 yards including a 16-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, he scored on a career long 52-yard run and on a 6-yard reception with 21 seconds left to cap a 10-play, 80 yard drive. Add it all up and he had 117 yards rushing on 15 carries, two catches for 19 yards and one kick return for 51 yards. Since taking over the starting running back role prior to the West Texas A&M game three weeks ago, Woodson has been outstanding. He is averaging 103.3 rushing yards, 35.7 receiving yards and another 58.3 kick return yards. He has moved into ninth place in the conference with 109.7 yards per game. Second Unit Gets a Chance With the Javelinas jumping out to a 42-3 halftime lead, a number of Hoggies were able to get some valuable playing time. On offense, the Javelinas were able to role out an entire new group of offensive lineman while Daniel Ramirez, Arron Fisher and Myron Brew each showed some ability. On defense, Roderick Benman, Dustin Appling and Roman Pula took advantage of their opportunities. Ramirez stepped in a quarterback and scored on a pair of touchdown runs, including a 52-yarder. He finished with 81 yards on six carries while completing 3-of-4 passing attempts for 38 yards. Fisher and Brew each posted good numbers in the running game. Fisher picked up 31 yards on five carries while Brew had 40 yards on seven carries. Appling led the team with six tackles, including five solo stops while Benman knocked down three passes at the line of scrimmage. Pula had three tackles, a sack, an interception and gained three yards on one carry.

West Texas A&M THREE TD TOSSES NOTHING UNUSUAL - Taylor Harris’ three passing touchdowns at Incarnate Word marked the sixth time this season that he has thrown for at least three TDs. He has thrown three TD passes at UIW, at Texas A&M-Kingsville and against Tarleton State. He has passed for four scores against Midwestern State and at Southwestern Oklahoma State (in just one half of play), and, he has tossed five TD passes against Southeastern Oklahoma State. PICK RETURNS BECOMING COMMON - When defensive back Maurice Caldwell returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown at Incarnate Word, it marked the fifth time this season that a WT player has returned an interception for a TD. SS Curtis Jefferson has returned two interceptions for scores (one of 59, one of 53 yards), while LB Glen Stanley and CB Caleb Randolph have also returned interceptions for scores. THREE AND OUT West Texas A&M’s defensive unit forced Incarnate Word into seven three-and-outs over the Cardinals’ initial eight possessions this past Saturday. By the half, UIW had run 29 offensive plays for just 64 yards. Conversely, the Buffs had taken 48 snaps and gained 284 offensive yards. HAMPTON COULD GO ALL THE WAY! – RB Tommy Hampton has shown the ability to go the distance any time he touches the football. At Incarnate Word, he returned a third quarter kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. He has now scored seven TDs this season, four rushing, two receiving and one return score. BAICHTAL EFFICIENT - WT linebacker Shad Baichtal made the most of his tackles at Incarnate Word. While being credited with just three stops, all solo, he bagged three TFLs for minus-20 yards, including a quarterback sack for minus-15 yards. RECEIVER’S-ONLY CLUB - Taylor Harris posted his fourth interception-free outing when he completed 21 of 34 passes at Incarnate Word. In fact, that contest saw him complete his first eight passing attempts (spread over three drives). OFFENSE ROLLIN’ ALONG - The Buffs’ 412 offensive yards against at Incarnate Word marked the eighth time in nine outings this season that the Buffaloes’ offensive unit has cranked out 400 or more yards in total offense. BUFFS ‘D’ MAKING HABIT OF SUB-500 YARD GAMES - The WT defense has held its opposition to fewer than 500 yards in all but one of its past 21 games. Most recently, the Buffs held Incarnate Word to 259 total yards (the fourth opponent to have failed to reach 300 yards). BUFFS SCORE IN A VARIETY OF WAYS – Nine games into the 2010 season, the Buffaloes have scored points ... and lots of ‘em ... in just about every way imaginable. They have passed for 27 TDs (including one off a field goal fake), rushed for 16, returned five interceptions for TDs, booted eight field goals, returned a kickoff for a TD, returned a blocked punt for a TD and returned a blocked PAT attempt for a two-point conversion.

Texas A&M-Kingsville Running Men - The Javelinas gained 325 yards on the ground in their 56-17 win at Southwestern Oklahoma. It was the most yards gained by the team since rushing for 353 yards in a 69-21 win over West Texas A&M on September 25, 2004. It was only the third time since the 2004 season that the team reached at least 300 yards
