CLASS PRE-WORK
Three fabrics are needed for the Disappearing 9-Patch Block, batting and a 13” square of backing fabric is needed for the back of the block. For Piecing the Block • Fabric #1 – One strip 4 3/4” wide x 15” long. • Fabric #2 - One strip 4 3/4” wide x 15” long. • Fabric #3 – One strip 4 3/4” wide x 15” long. • Thread : cotton or polyester general purpose machine sewing thread. • Machine Needle: size 75 quilting or size 80 universal. • Presser Foot: For piecing, a ¼” quilting foot with side guide is recommended, or ¼” foot without side guide, or a general purpose foot. • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler. (The classroom is equipped with 2-3 cutting mats and rotary cutters.)
• Sewing Machine and general sewing supplies
Class Pre-Work: Pre-washing the fabric is optional. I do recommend ironing the fabric and using a spray starch or starch alternative to help stabilize the fabric before cutting and sewing. Optional Pre-work; will be done in class if not as pre-work: Cut Fabrics 1, 2 and 3 as specified, each 4 ¾” wide by 15” long. Sew the three strips together with ¼” seams. 1 2 3
For Quilting • Backing fabric - One 13” square. Note: a ‘busy’ print will hide the quilting thread. On a solid or tone-on-tone fabric the quilting thread will stand out.
• Batting – One 13” square. Recommended: 100% cotton or a 70/30 or 80/20 Cotton/Polyester Blend. • Optional: Temporary spray adhesive and/or water-soluble thread for basting quilt sandwich together. • Optional for patterned quilting: quilt pattern to be traced and pattern paper, or quilt stencil and marking tools. Note: quilting options without pattern are free-motion meandering or presser foot straight line, ditch-stitching or meandering. The pattern used for the sample will be provided. • Thread for Quilting: Your choice. Possibilities include regular (30-50 wt) cotton quilting thread; heavier thread such as 12 wt cotton thread; 30/40 wt polyester or rayon machine embroidery thread; monofilament (invisible) thread. • Machine Needle for Quilting, Type – Quilting (recommended), Universal or Topstitch, size appropriate for thread: a. Size 75, 80 or 90 for ‘regular’ quilting thread (30-50wt); b. Size 75 for monofilament (invisible) thread; c. For 12 wt thread, bring a size 90 or 100 Quilting or Topstitch needle. • Presser Feet: For quilting, a presser foot appropriate for the chosen quilting method. • Optional - Square Ruler: a 12 ½” square ruler for squaring up blocks.
