Please note: No food, drinks, or children under the age of 16 will be allowed in the machine room. We cannot watch unattended children while you are using the machine, so please leave little ones at home that day. We appreciate your adherence to these policies.
HOW WILL I LEARN TO USE THE MACHINE? You must first complete an introductory class where you will learn to wind and load a bobbin, thread the machine, load the quilt, and operate the machine. Some quilting techniques will be covered. Then, before renting the machine to quilt on your own, you will schedule a oneon-one “mentored” session. Bring your own muslin and batting to that session and we will guide you through a series of practice exercises in loading and unloading the “quilt,” threading the machine, adjusting tension, and actual quilting. Upon completion, you will be certified to use our machine! * You may want to devote another session or two to practicing your skills — we’ll give you some discount coupons for these first couple of sessions. WHAT’S INCLUDED IN MY RENTAL FEE? Use of a cleaned and oiled, state-of-the art APQS long-arm quilting machine with a stitch regulator. Zippers are attached to the canvas so that you can “zip through” the loading process! (Requires purchase of a complementary set of three zippers that you will baste to your quilt top and backing fabric. Instruction provided in the Machine Certification class.) Use of the bobbin winder if you want to wind your own bobbins (instead of purchasing pre-wound bobbins). WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED? Needles and thread, backing fabric, batting. You must purchase needles from us so that we are assured you have the correct needle for the machine. You may purchase thread and/or prewound bobbins from us, or you may use your own thread if we approve it for use in our machine (no poorquality thread, no glazed thread, etc.).
IS HELP AVAILABLE DURING MY RENTAL SESSION? Usually. There may be times when only limited help is available. Depending on your own comfort level following completion of your certification classes, you may wish to schedule additional mentored sessions. WHAT CAN I FINISH IN ONE RENTAL SESSION? It will depend on how fast and how heavily you quilt. Once you are more experienced, you should be able to quilt a full-to-queen-size quilt with an all-over pattern in a single session, especially if you use the zipper system! WHAT IF MY QUILT ISN’T FINISHED AT THE END OF MY SESSION? You will learn in class about how the zipper system can help in this situation. You may also be able to extend your session if no one else has reserved the machine. (Additional charges apply.) MAY I RENT THE MACHINE FOR LESS THAN A FULL SESSION? The machine can only be reserved for a full session. However, when it is not in use, we’re happy to let you use it for less than a full session on a walk-in basis. The minimum charge for this type of rental is $25, which covers one hour of use. Every 15 minutes (or portion thereof) after the first hour is charged at a rate of $4. (Prices effective as of January, 2008. Subject to change. Please inquire at time of reservation.) WILL MY PCC CARD BE STAMPED FOR THE RENTAL FEE? No, but it will be stamped for supplies you purchase (batting, thread, etc.) * Your certification will expire three months after your mentored session unless you rent the machine during that period.
