Called to the Wall: Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce, above, leads pilgrims in “Called to the Wall,” a one-day Via Crucis (“Way of the Cross”) pilgrimage to the U.S.- Mexico border last year to demonstrate solidarity with immigrants. At left, Luis Garibay, building superintendent of the Cathedral Center, secures a figure of Jesus that accompanied the group. Bruce, along with Bishop Diocesan James Mathes of the Diocese of San Diego, will lead a similar pilgrimage tomorrow, March 25, the Monday of Holy Week. Participants will gather at 8:30 a.m. at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, and begin by praying the Stations of the Cross in English and Spanish. They will caravan by car to Church of the Messiah in Santa Ana, then to St. John’s Church, Chula Vista, and finally to a parking lot near the beach in south San Diego, where they will leave their cars to take a 45-minute walk along the shore to the border fence at Friendship Park. At the border wall, Bishop Bruce and Bishop Mathes will celebrate Eucharist at about 3 p.m. Participants may join in at any of the several stops on the way. he NetsforLife® Inspiration Fund has exceeded its $5 million goal due to the generosity of supporters across the Episcopal Church and beyond, according to a release from Episcopal Relief & Development, which sponsors the fund. Among the supporters were congregations, schools, organizations and individuals in the Diocese of Los Angeles who raised enough money to buy more than more than 23,000 nets, according to Christian Kassoff, diocesan coordinator. Since 2006, Episcopal Relief & Development’s NetsforLife program partnership has distributed more than 11 million mosquito nets and reduced malaria-related deaths by 45% in participating sub-Saharan African communities. Working in partnership with churches and faith-based groups, NetsforLife has trained 82,000 community agents and reached more than 30 million people in remote areas of Africa. At the 2009 General Convention, the Episcopal Church made NetsforLife the centerpiece of its response to the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and pledged 0.7% of its budget to this campaign. Although the campaign is complete, the work of NetsforLife will continue. Contributions may be sent to NetsforLife Inspiration Fund, Episcopal Relief & Development, P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058. ?

Beginning the Holy Week journey By Diane Jardine Bruce
I
t is today, Palm Sunday, that we begin our week-long celebration of our Christian Passover. Today we hear of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the colt that he rode on walking on palm branches — the people cheering: Hosanna! Hosanna! But it isn’t all hosannas and cheering this week. Holy Week is a journey in and of itself — through triumph and pain, from death to life! I often think if we “do this week right” — if we truly follow the story of Christ in Holy Week — our lives will be full of hosannas, full of sadness, full of grief, and finally, full of joy. Jam-packed into one week, we experience every human emotion — deeply. As we journey together to the last Supper and to the cross, we are called to answer if we know Jesus or not — to know Christ, or to deny that we know this person who was nailed to a cross. Will we confess our faith, or run away and think that we are saving our

lives? If we face ourselves, and are honest with ourselves, and turn our faces to that light of Easter, we will find ourselves standing outside the tomb on Easter day, forgiven and loved — forgiven and loved — rejoicing with those that had faith then, through the ages and now. Rejoicing that our Savior is risen, a Savior who loves us — us — as broken and fragile as we are. I invite you to be passionate about this week of the Passion. Let us explore in this short week more and more of who we are as God’s children, and what God’s Son has done for us! It is a humbling yet wonderful experience. ?
