--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------15 MAY 2012 MEETING We had 22 members and one guest, Ms. Susan Switzer Strong, at our May meeting held in the Daedalian room at the Surf’s Edge Club. We did not have a “formal” guest speaker for this event, but Ms. Strong regaled our group with some anecdotes of growing up as an Air Force “brat”. Her father, Byron R. Switzer, Col USAF (ret) and Founding number: 13672, started out in the US Army Signal Corps circa 1917. Ms. Strong told how she followed her dad around every Saturday to Logan airport, until her mom put a stop to it when she turned 13. To this day she has never forgiven her mom for putting an end to her Saturday routine. In 1938 her dad was recalled to active duty and posted to the War department in Washington, D.C. At the start of WWII he was sent overseas to Africa and Italy, in an intelligence role. He later served as an Air Attaché in Italy and then in 1947 started the first Air ROTC unit at the University of North Carolina. Ms Strong also shared a few stories about living on Maxwell AFB next door to Gen Curtis LeMay and attending parties at his house. She shared several tales of her adventures helping fly in her dad’s AT-6. Finally Ms. Strong relayed a story of her dad parachuting out of an AT-6 along with several other passengers and how her he made sure he collected his five gallons of clams before walking for help. She said her dad was a “practical” joker with a “British” sense of humour and that “All the good things I learned from my father”. Ms. Strong’s stories were followed by a couple from our members. All in all a great time was had by all who attended.

NEW BUSINESS AND OTHER ITEMS A business meeting was held discussing the recent scholarship decisions, membership rosters and database and a proposal for Col Richoux to be the speaker at our June meeting.
