Weekend Review

The Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys, Great Lakes, Northeast, and Deep South trended cooler than normal and LY. The Intermountain West saw the warmest conditions versus normal and LY. The West Coast was warmer than normal and LY on Friday but trended cooler through the weekend. Wet weather impacted the East Coast on Friday and showers lingered in southeast Canada and the Northeast throughout the weekend. A separate storm system brought showers to California. Weekly Summary

• Solid Start for Northeast and West, Finished Back of the Pack. Early week, temperatures trended above normal and LY across the East and West. The New England, Mid-Atlantic, and South Atlantic regions were warmest for May week 1 since 2015; the Mountain region since 2009. Cooler temperatures arrived late week. • The Midwest Couldn’t Make it Out of the Gate. The central U.S. dealt with cooler than normal and LY temperatures most of the week, limiting demand for spring goods. The North Central and West South Central regions were coolest since 2011. Snow, some heavy, fell from Kansas to Minnesota early week. • “Mudders” in the Mid-South and Northeast. Heavy rain continued in the Mississippi Valley, leading to more significant flooding. The Northeast also dealt with heavy rain and flash flooding. The Mid-Atlantic was wettest for the week since 1989, the East North Central since 2003. Severe weather hit portions of the Deep South, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast throughout the week. • Canada Continued to Buck Warm and Dry Weather. Despite warmer than normal conditions in western Canada and the Canadian Prairies, temperatures continued to trend cooler than LY across the majority of the country. A wet week for many across Canada resulted in the country’s wettest May week 1 in 55+ years. • Last year, the U.S. started May coolest since 2011. It was wetter than normal, driven by the East and West Coasts. Temperatures in Canada were warmer than normal. It was Canada's driest beginning of May since 2008. This was also the run-up week to Mother’s Day, which occurred on Sunday, May 8th, one week earlier than 2017.

Weekend Review

It was a ‘Saturday soaker’ for the East Coast as a slow-moving Nor’easter brought unseasonably cool temperatures and periods of heavy rain. Conditions cleared in time for Mother’s Day everywhere except New England and eastern Canada. Elsewhere, Moms in the Plains, Midwest, and South enjoyed a pleasant weekend with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Western regions trended cooler than normal with dry conditions in California and the Southwest and showers in the Pacific Northwest. Sat., Sat.5/13 1/28

• Coastal Moms Kept their Cool. The East and West Coasts experienced temperatures below both normal and LY for much of last week. The Mid-Atlantic region was coolest since 1989, South Atlantic region since 2008, and the New England region since 2010. In the West, the Pacific region trended coolest since 2011. • Plains Moms Felt the Warmth. Temperatures trended 5-15°F above normal across the Central and Northern Plains. Spring apparel and consumables were in high demand throughout the West North Central region, which was warmest since 2013. • Rain Boots Required. Nationally, rainfall in the U.S. was the most since 2013. The Pacific region saw its wettest second week of May since 2005. Additionally, over 400 severe weather reports plagued the Central and Southern Plains throughout the week. • Playing it Cool in Canada. Most major markets in Canada continued to trend cooler than both normal and LY. Eastern markets dried out late week which helped relieve some of the flooding from prior weeks. • Mother’s Day Recap. Nationally, the U.S. trended warmest since 2015. The West North Central region was warmest since 2007. Conversely, the New England region had its coolest Mother’s Day since 2010. Rainfall was the least since 2011. In Canada, Mother’s Day was coolest since 2011 and wettest since 2013. • Last year, the U.S. was coolest since 2014, driven by cooler temperatures in the East. The week was driest since 2013. Canada was coolest since 2010 and driest since 2012. Mother's Day (5/8/16) fell a week earlier and was coolest and driest since 2013 in the U.S., in Canada it was coolest since 2011 and wettest since 2013.

Weekend Review

A seasonably cool and dry weekend took over many markets in the Northeast, which was a stark contrast to the heat wave that took place late week. Cooler air continued to dominate the Plains along with some showers from Texas to the Great Lakes. The West warmed compared to earlier in the week, trending warmer and drier than normal on Saturday and Sunday. Severe storms and showers extended from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast.

• Eastern Heat. Warm temperatures enveloped the eastern U.S. leading to the nation’s warmest 3rd week of May since 2014. Heat indices soared into the 90s as Baltimore, Boston, Hartford, New York City, and Philadelphia all recorded their first official heat wave of the year. The East South Central and South Atlantic regions were warmest for the week since 1998. The New England, Mid-Atlantic, and East North Central regions were warmest since 2012, supporting year-over-year demand for spring merchandise. • Chillin’ Out West. Temperatures trended well below normal and LY across the western U.S. The Mountain and Pacific regions both had their coolest 3rd week of May since 2011. • Rain, Rain, Go Away! Heavy rain continued across the central U.S. as the West North Central region was wettest in over 55 years. Wet weather also persisted across northwestern states during the first half of the week. There were over 1,400 reports of severe weather throughout the week. Tornadoes, wind, and large hail continued across the central U.S., while the East experienced mostly high winds. • Canada Follows Suit. Nationally, Canada was warmest for the week since 2015. Eastern provinces enjoyed a warming trend while western provinces trended cooler than both LY and normal. Rain accompanied the warmer weather in the East resulting in the country's wettest 3rd week of May since 2013. • Last year, the U.S. was coolest since 2011. The week was drier than normal with rain focused in the South Atlantic region. Temperatures in Canada were coolest since 2009, driven by eastern and western provinces. Below normal and LY temperatures were found in the Northeast and Great Lakes over the holiday weekend. The South Central region enjoyed summer-like conditions through Saturday but trended cooler for Sunday and Monday. The West Coast saw above normal temperatures. Storms in parts of the South Central and Mid-South regions produced damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. Showers fell across the Northeast late Sunday and early on Memorial Day. • A Flip of the Switch. Temperatures sank below normal and LY from the Plains to the East Coast. The West North Central region had its coolest May week 4 since 1997; the West South Central region since 1999. • Firing Up the Grill. In contrast to the East, intense summer heat built across the western U.S. Temperatures broke 100°F across the California Valleys, while the Northwest baked in 90°F heat. The Pacific region was warmest since 1997 and the Mountain region since 2011, driving seasonal demand. • Rain, Rain, Go Away. Outdoor activities were limited as all eastern regions experienced more rain vs. LY. The South Atlantic region had its wettest end to May since 1976, the East South Central region since 2000, and the Mid-Atlantic region since 2004. There were over 1,000 severe weather reports during the week. • Memorial Day Recap. Nationally, Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th, was coolest and wettest since 2015. The West North Central region was coolest since 2008 with much of the East coolest since 2013. Conversely, the Pacific region was warmest since 1995. The East South Central region had its most rain since 2004. • Canada Follows Suit. Canada was coolest for the week since 2011. Eastern provinces saw a drop-off in temperatures while warmth surged into the West. Rain fell across much of the country, including Toronto which had its most rain for the week in the past 55+ years. Only Vancouver missed out on rain, driest since 2007. • Last year, the U.S. ended retail May warmer than normal. The week was driest since 2010. Tropical Storm Bonnie formed over the weekend and moved up the East Coast, bringing localized flooding to the Carolinas. Canada also experienced warmer than normal temperatures and the driest end to May since 2010.
