Define Customized Learning - In an effort to create a definition of Customized Learning for our many publics, Dr. Kelly Coffin offered a draft of a definition that the network reviewed. The network wants the definition to: o Reference Chuck Schwahn’s eight tenets o Support collaboration o Help the public move from their personal school experience to what children need for their world o Support students moving at their own pace o Show how being “in control” looks different in Customized Learning o That the network believes we are obligated to educate the community o Support of developing relationships between teachers/students/community o Data (student level) can be used to educate the community o We need to face the harsh realities of “what is”
Dr. Coffin and Ann Hinsdale-Knisel will present a second draft of the Customized Learning definition at the April meeting.
Dr. Coffin asked those at the table to share examples of Customized Learning they have seen, read about, and heard about: o

In Tecumseh, a community meeting was held with students sharing how they have experienced learning that was slowed down and deeper. They said they learned about their personal strengths in the customized learning setting. Sherrie Wiedyk (Adrian High School) shared about a recent Professional Development she attended that was structured around projects/hands-on learning. She believes teachers are key to acceptance of customized learning and need to be “brought in”/“on board”. Patricia Gray: We need to listen to student voices; be aware of educator/administrator bias.
The network discussed professional development for educators and administrators for this summer and next school year. The network feels there is an urgency to help educators learn about Customized Learning in a customized learning environment (rather than a sit and get environment). We will work with JoAnna Keebler to provide a draft schedule at the April meeting. The Lenawee County Superintendents recently met with district principals about Customized Learning. One area that needs to be included is how to move flexible schedules found in elementary to middle and high school.
Stan Masters shared his reading list of customized learning resources: Books:
