NOTES ON THE HAWKS HOLDING THEM TO 50 Monmouth set a season low defensively against Iona, allowing just 50 points 120 WINS FOR COACH RICE Monmouth Head Coach King Rice picked up his 120th career win over Manhattan, the fifth Monmouth coach to reach that mark all time. His 100th career win also came over the Jaspers, coming at Draddy Gym. LOCKING DOWN AT HOME Monmouth is giving up 46.5 points per game at home against MAAC opponents this season, holding both Saint Peter’s and Manhattan under 50 points. Against the Jaspers, MU allowed just two two-point field goals in the opening half. SHOOTING IT WELL MU posted its best field goal percentage of the season against Manhattan, shooting 52.5% from the field on 23-of-43, including four makes from three. Eight Hawks converted field goals in the game. PAPAS GETS IT GOING Sophomore George Papas has gone for eight points in two of his last four games, including hitting a huge pair of triples in the win over Manhattan to extend the Hawks lead in the second half. He has taken 57 shots this season, with 43 coming from downtown. A WILD COMEBACK Monmouth trailed Quinnipiac by 14 with 1:33 to play in regulation, and by 12 inside the final minute, but forced overtime thanks to a 19-5 run to end the game. The Hawks scored 17 points in 51 seconds to tie, doing so in the final 54 seconds of the contest. MU forced four turnovers in the contest, including a back court violation, a five-second call, a ten-second call, and an offensive foul on an inbounds attempt. Ray Salnave’s layup with just over three ticks remaining was the tying bucket, and Deion Hammond scored nine points during the comeback. HAMMOND MAKING LIKE REGGIE MILLER Deion Hammond scored seven points in 1.2 seconds against Quinnipiac, and nine points in 3.9 seconds to spark the comeback. He nailed a straight on three with 36.2 seconds to play, and after QU failed to get the ball inbounded resulting in a violation, Hammond took the ensuing trigger and banked home a three, plus the foul with 35 seconds exactly to go. Following a Bobcats offensive foul that took no time off, Hammond dropped a baseline runner with 32.3 remaining, capping his remarkable run. RUTHERFORD FINDS DOUBLES For the first time in 16 games as a Hawk, Nick Rutherford reached the double-figure plateau at Quinnipiac, scoring 10 points on 5-7 shooting on the night. All five of his baskets came on layups, and the senior played over 35 minutes in the double OT affair. HAMMOND’S CAREER HIGH Helped along by his scoring outburst in the final minute, Deion Hammond notched a career-high of 27 pointst at Quinnipiac, the most by a Hawk this season. His 10 made field goals were also a career best, and the sophomore netted 20+ points for the fourth time in his career and third time this season.
