Autumn Term —Issue 7 Thursday 15th October 2015

Hello Everyone from Mrs Flinn I have so much to say this week and so little space; therefore I’m going to give bullet points today and a fuller report and some photos next week! 

MHSA - thank you all so much for the cheque for £20 000 that you presented to me and Mr Church last week. You are all superstars and we appreciate your support and commitment. Harvest - as always you supported our harvest appeal really generously. Thanks to Hamed’s dad and Orlando’s mum for helping to transport the foodstuffs to HAB. We will let you know how much you raised for Save the Children’s work with children in Syria next week. We shall keep accepting money for this until Wednesday if you’d still like to donate. Black History Month Lunch - Pride have planned this for Thursday 22nd October - all children are invited to share in this special lunch costing just £2.10!

Our Competition Winners Well done for your fabulous research about Queen Elizabeth II - our longest reigning monarch! Your fabulous facts will be displayed in school for all to see!

Our Hands on Roman Museum Visit! The museum was amazing! It was very interesting with lots of Roman artefacts. We each got a booklet to fill in. We had to answer the questions by looking at the museum artefacts. Our favourite thing was the Roman workshop where we got to touch and feel real Roman artefacts. By Emily and Alex 4F

PURPLE DAY On Wednesday 21st October we will be supporting the End Polio campaign by asking all staff and children to dress in purple and donate £1. The Rotary Club of Barnet have purchased approx. 4000 purple crocus bulbs that the children will be planting next week as part of the campaign which we hope will bloom in Spring and remind us of this important campaign. When India was declared polio-free in 2014, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) entire Southeast Asia Region – comprised of 11 countries – was declared polio-free, a major milestone for global public health; however, the disease that can paralyze and even kill its victims still exists in parts of the world. “With Rotary, we made tremendous progress last year. We must keep going to end polio," “If the world’s commitment to polio eradication remains strong, we will soon see a polio-free world.” We hope that you will join us in thanking Rotary Club of Barnet and support our Purple Day. Cakes will be on sale in the playground at the end of the day - all proceeds will go towards the campaign. If you are able to help on the day by giving up your time to help at the cake sale or by bringing cakes to sell that would be amazing too. 6C Class Assembly

Learning together—staff meeting

Last Friday, 6C performed their class assembly in front of the whole school and parents. Did you know that the only place that you would find penguins and polar bears together is in a zoo? Our assembly was about the differences and similarities between The Arctic and Antarctica. We told everybody about our research and performed a Greek play about Daedalus and Icarus. In addition, we sang our own version of ‘Ice, Ice, Baby’! We thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing and performing. Thank you, Moss Hall students for being such a good audience and thank you, parents for coming.

In our staff meeting, we were lucky enough to have Mrs Helmi teach us more about Scratch, a programming tool that allows you to create animations, games and interactive stories. This session was extremely valuable as it upskilled us, allowing us to teach programming more effectively to Moss Hall children. Even teachers have to learn together, and what fun it was too!

Moss Hall Halloween Holiday Club The Playcentre committee recently made the decision to increase the holiday club fees by a small amount. Whilst our expenses for both staff and equipment are increasing, we have not increased our fees for many years. It is paramount we continue to provide a fun and safe retreat for your children during the holidays and as such we have introduced a new fee structure as follows: Daily: £22 (£20 for siblings) Trip day: £27 (no sibling discount) Half day: £15 (no sibling discount) Full week: £105 (£97 for siblings) Please note that strict terms apply which require full payment in advance to secure your child's place. We hope we have your understanding on this matter and we look forward to welcoming your children to the holiday club soon. We are taking bookings for the October half term (26-30 October) and have lots of fun activities planned as usual. Please email [email protected]

Learning Together at London Zoo On Tuesday 29 September, 6G and 6C went to the zoo. At the zoo, we split into groups and set off to look at animals. Some of the animals we went to see were gorillas and monkeys. The monkeys were all having some fun either stealing bananas and hiding, or showing off with fancy tricks. Before lunch, we had a workshop where we looked at how animals adapt to their environment and why that helps them. On the way back, the train was quite crowded but everyone seemed to have fun.
