2016 All Star Interest, Eligibility, Selection and Participation

Dear Parents: Each year, the Newport Mesa Girls Softball League, through its coaches, nominates and elects All Star teams. There will be one All Star team from each of the 8U/10U/12U divisions representing NMGS.

Before the coaches nominate the players, they need to know which players and families are interested in being considered. This letter and form are to give all players the opportunity to opt in or opt out of consideration for the teams. This is not a nomination form. The following is a brief synopsis of player selection: 

Each Manager will advise the selection group of which players would like to be considered for All Star nomination and possible selection, based upon the parent completion and submission of this form. Team Managers will submit a list of 25 players total for their respective division in the order of the most deserving, for the All Star team to the league President and respective Division Coordinator.

All Star teams are finalized on or after May 1, 2016.

The commitment for All Stars generally lasts from early-May to the middle of June, but could be until the end of July. Practices are held during the week and can be on weekends at the manager’s discretion. Many managers choose to practice every day leading up to the first tournament which will be sometime in Mid-May. Each team will have at least one out of town tournament and will participate in a total of five tournaments. All teams will participate in districts with the possibility of playing in the state tournament and nationals. The financial commitment involved would normally be around $350 per player, which includes tournament fees, uniforms, tournament pins, NMGS batting helmet and bat bag. However, NMGS has decided to cover the cost of the tournament fees, as a way of making the All Star experience more rewarding. Overnight stays may be required for at least one of the tournaments, which is not covered by NMGS.

Please complete the attached form and return it to your Manager no later than April 15, 2016. You may also email it to: [email protected]. If you have any questions, please contact your coach or player agent.

2016 All-Star Information

Newport Mesa Girls Softball All-Star Interest, Eligibility, Selection and Participation

NMGS Players and Parents, As we approach the end of the 2016 recreational softball season, we will be transitioning to All-Star team selection in preparation for the All-Star season. All-Star play builds on the recreational program but shifts focus from player development and participation to a competitive program that gives players the opportunity to compete against other premier Southern California fast pitch leagues. All Star players are announced by the All-Star Manager on or before May 3. Girls interested in All-Star play are required to declare their interest by signing the enclosed Interest and Eligibility Form and submit to their team manager NO LATER THAN April 15, 2016. How does All-Star Play differ from recreational play? * Focus is competitive play * Players are taught advanced skills and strategies * Players are normally assigned to no more than two positions (to ensure that players understand all the responsibilities of the position(s)) * Manager focus is on the TEAM playing at the highest level possible nurturing a goal oriented, team centric, positive environment focused on achieving results from dedication and hard work What is required with the All-Star commitment? 

Players will be expected to participate in ALL team functions, including tournaments, practices and meetings set forth by NMGS and/or the team Manager.

There is a time commitment to a minimum of 5 tournaments pre-selected by the Board of Directors (see preliminary schedule below); tournaments run between mid-May and the end of June and if teams qualify for the state or national tournaments, may continue through the first week of August.

All-Star teams practice 3-5 times per week, including weekends and practices may run up to 3 hours; tournaments generally begin on Fridays and end on Sundays, however, occasional Thursday or Monday tournament play may be scheduled. Parents and players are advised that playing time and defensive positions are NOT guaranteed; some tournaments do not allow bat-around and require straight substitution per ASA rules; while all of our All-Stars are great players, playing time and positioning are at the Manager’s discretion and NOT appropriate subjects to discuss with coaches, before, during, or after a game. To support the All-Star program, parents will be required to volunteer their time, if needed to their daughter’s perspective team. This may include, but not limited to, scorekeeping, snack bar, dugout parent and assist the coaches with pre-game warm-ups and field maintenance (after all practices).

 

Only those who have been cleared on a background check during the 2016 season are eligible to coach or volunteer. Tentative tournament dates are as follows:
