NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kimberly Teacher One of Only 16 Selected for a Prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar Kimberly, Wis. – April 12, 2016 – Josh Zimmers, a social studies teacher at Kimberly High School, has been selected to attend a National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar. He is one of only 16 educators from across the U.S. chosen to participate in a five-week seminar at Emory University in Atlanta. Selected educators receive a grant to help cover the costs to attend the seminar. The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency that supports research and learning in history, literature, philosophy and other areas of the humanities by funding selected, peer-reviewed proposals from around the nation. Through his participation, Zimmers will strengthen his knowledge of the subjects he teaches. “I pursued the National Endowment for the Humanities seminar for several reasons,” said Josh Zimmers. “I want to learn with a community of distinguished colleagues, to stretch my understanding, to be challenged with new ideas, and delve deeply into a topic that has intrigued me for years. I love learning and I want to contribute to the worthy conversation of American history.”
Josh Zimmers, a social studies teacher at Kimberly High School, is one of 16 educators in the country selected to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar.
To apply for consideration, educators are required to write an essay describing their interest in the topic and how their participation will benefit their learning community. “I want to strengthen myself as a teacher by -more-
continuing to develop through research and discussion,” added Zimmers. “I want to bring a liberal arts environment to my classroom so that students can revel in and be challenged by the pursuit of knowledge and truth, as opposed to simply trying to get the letter grade.” In the seminar, Zimmers will study common texts, view and analyze films, exchange ideas about the art of teaching, and share insights and materials with colleagues and students. “I was enthused to support Josh for this endowment as he possesses a great depth of content knowledge, models critical thinking and inquiry, embraces technology as a tool to support learning, and strives to provide unique and personalized learning opportunities for his students,” said Mike Rietveld, principal of Kimberly High School. Zimmers will participate in the five-week seminar titled “Communism and American Life.” While never becoming a mass movement in the U.S., communism still had a profound impact on national life and culture. Anti-communism grew to become a powerful force in the 1940s with a pivotal role played by Grand Chute native Joseph McCarthy. The politics and influence behind anti-communism sparked an era filled with suspicion of communist infiltration, accusations and charges of subversion. The “red decade” was fueled by post World War II fears of communism in America and communist countries like the Soviet Union. The dilemmas of fear, loyalty and the values held by our democratic society still resonate in American life. Zimmers added, “History is a great teacher, and it seems every generation can learn from the human tendencies of allowing fear to guide our decisions.” About the Kimberly Area School District The Kimberly Area School District is a progressive public school district committed to providing the best possible education available to students.
