Gold Sportsmark for Batchley First!

We had confirmation this week that we have been awarded the Gold Sportsmark – the highest school PE award available! We believe we are the only first school in Redditch to have been awarded this (not 100% sure!). This recognises the exceptional work we do with sport at the school; in lesson time, our clubs and our interschool competition and marks a long term plan to work our way up to this level. A big thank you to Miss Douglas who co-ordinated the application, ably supported by Mrs Timbrell, who work tirelessly to develop sport at the school, well supported by a team of staff who run all the different activities. Communication Only 2 responses to our online poll about the newsletter… We would love to be able to get regular feedback about things and think a poll on twitter would do that. So if you only get twitter for this purpose, we could then get your opinions on lots of things… Don’t forget we try and get as much communication out as we can – we have a school Facebook page (@Batchleyfirstschool), run by one of our parents, and we also have a twitter page (@Batchley1st).

Class News Foundation Stage Speech and language unit have made handprints, Portrait jigsaws and Playdough faces. The S+L Unit and Nursery Plus are looking forward to their coffee morning next week, on 13th October at 10.00am til 11.30am. Nursery Plus -We have labelled simple language alongside this, combining play and language development. In Nursery the children have been learning about spiders and have been on a shape hunt around the school. They have enjoyed making making shape pictures. In Reception the children have played 6 lovely things and have been on a hunt around school looking for dinosaurs and Mr Whiteley! They are continuing with phonics and are starting to blend sounds together for reading. Years 1 and 2 Year 1 have been writing about the Naughty Bus this week and all the characters waiting in the bus queue. In Year 2 they have been finishing our cartoon story of The Twits. In maths, both year groups have been looking at the value of two and three digit numbers, Year 2 have been using this to add and subtract. Years 3 and 4 Year 3 have been improving their methods for subtracting amounts and these have included using a number line and moving onto column subtraction. They have applied these methods during problem solving. In literacy they have been sequencing events which has resulted in writing a setting description. Year 4 have also been working on subtracting which has involved column method involving decomposition and applying these in a real life context. During literacy they have been creating a recipe for making frobscottle, from the BFG.

Breakfast Club If you need an early start to get to work, there are spaces in our Breakfast Club. From 8.00 – 8.55a.m, and for just £1.50 a day, children are given breakfast and can choose from a variety of activities until it is time to start school. Ask at the office for details. PE Kits We still have a couple of children in in most classes that haven’t got PE kit. Please can you make sure your child has a named PE kit (white/red t-shirt and black shorts) in school every day. (We didn’t know that Orchard Clothing were stocking red PE tops for us, but we really like them!) Reading Please support our work in school by trying to hear your child read every day, and making sure they bring their reading book and reading record back to school every day. It makes a HUGE difference to a child’s reading if they are heard every day. Dates for your Diary Friday 21st October – school closes for half term Monday 31st October – back to school Friday 16th December – school closes for Christmas break
