“Fun” Raising Bound for Lyme, Montreal and Asia

the

Lyme School

This quarter middle school students have been involved in several fund raising activities. The sixth grade sponsored a car wash and raised over $400 for the Pearl Dimmick fund. Pearl Dimmick was a long time Lyme resident who established a fund to provide support for a variety of community needs to Lyme residents. Jan Williams, chair of the fund’s committee, spoke to the class about Pearl and the importance of community service and philanthropy. The seventh grade and their parents hosted a French Cafe’ to raise money for their trip to Montreal. It was a huge success (a petition is being circulated to have them host one every morning-proceeds to support the purchase of wider pants and longer belts for the principal). The eighth grade organized the “Pennies for Peace” drive. Pennies for Peace is an organization that raises money to support schools in Central Asia, founded by mountaineer, Greg Mortenson (more info at www.Penniesforpeace.org).

The Good, the Bad, and the.... Strikingly Authentic Last week, some of the most influential people in recent history showed up in seventh grade social studies for a photo shoot. In an effort to better understand the modern world, the seventh grade has been taking an in-depth look at some of the significant people and events that have shaped history, post Industrial Revolution. This exploration is building upon an examination of the industrial revolution in which students used period art (European) and photography (American) to build both visual literacy skills and an understanding of the realities of the Industrial Revolution. Last week students re-visited their growing visual literacy skills by staging still images that represent significant historical figures that they chose and researched. Through their development of visual literacy skills, students have built an understanding of the process through which making concrete, objective observations can lead to the development of reliable inferences. Therefore, in the staging of their images, seventh graders worked hard to include as many observable details as they could, thereby providing viewers insight into the significance of their chosen subject. On right Mother Teresa, Adolf Hitler, and Che Guevara .
