Senior Football Tadhg Crowley Cup.

Glenville U21 tournament Quarter Final

Valley Rovers Senior Footballers got their season off on the right foot with an away win over near neighbours Newscestown on Sunday afternoon in the Tadhg Crowley Cup. Two well taken goals, one in each half from corner forward Richie Butler set the Rovers up for a semi final meeting with Bishopstown.

Valley Rovers U21 footballers took on Bantry in the quarter final of the Glenville tournament on Sunday in Brinny. Playing against a very strong wind in the first half Valleys made the better start scoring a goal in the fifth minute. After that it was all Bantry scoring six points. Only for some wayward shooting the visitors should have been more than just three ahead at half time. At the start of the second half Valleys made the better start scoring two points, Bantry responded with a goal in the 15th minute to leave the score 1-6 to 1-2 in favour of Bantry. Valleys upped their game scoring 12 to lead by a point going in to the last five minutes. Two late Bantry points gave them victory on a scoreline Valley Rovers 2-04 Bantry 1-08.

Newcestown led from the off with a goal inside the first 2 minutes. Both side traded point from then to the 30th minute when Richie bagged his first with the sides going in level at half-time 1-5 apiece. Two points each from John Cottrell and team captain for the year Fiachra Lynch along with a point from wing back Aidan Walsh kept the Rovers in touch. Again the home team goaled inside the first 2 minutes of the second half but from then on it was all the Rovers, outscoring their opponents 1-7 to 0-2. While it was the boots of Cottrell and Lynch that kept the white flag waving in the second half, Butler chipped in with 11 for the Rovers to win convincingly and deservedly by 5 points when the final whistle blew, 2-12 to 2-7. Starting with a number of notable absentees this was an excellent team performance from 1 to 15 with the two substitutes also playing their part. Credit must also be given to those that didn’t see some action but were ready if called upon on a very cold afternoon.
