Hi, my name is Brad Parsons and I am coaching the Nordic Ski team this year with co-coach Jessica Metuzals and assistant coach James Taylor. We are excited for the upcoming 2013/2014 season as the team is looking really strong. The team hopes to build on positive results from last season’s OUA 2012/2013 championships in Thunder Bay. At the OUA races, the women’s side was led by Katie Prufer who came in 12th in the 5 km skate race, and on the men’s side, the relay team placed 4th overall. With a strong group of incoming athletes, many of whom have nationallevel racing experience, the team has its eye on OUA hardware. We’ve been training hard! Throughout the fall, we have had 3 formal aerobic practices each week including roller skiing, long intensity and tempo intervals as well as several strength workouts in the gym. We have been fortunate enough to work with Mark Doble, who coached the National Development Team in Thunder Bay last year, to develop a strength program. We are also looking forward to him assisting us at upcoming races this season. We currently have about 15-20 members training with the team and a core racing team who are showing great commitment. This year instead of the traditional roller skiing fall training camp we decided to get an early jump on winter. 12 team members travelled to Foret Montmorency, just north of Quebec City where they had saved up enough snow from last winter to produce a 1.5km loop of amazing trails. The weekend consisted of both classic and skate technique work as well as a fun team relay and lots of team building activities. This early season on-snow work will give us a great advantage over our competition and allow for an easier transition once we get snow here in Ontario. The upcoming race season includes races at the OUA invitational at Arrowhead Provincial Park, Eastern Canadian Championships in Ottawa and the OUA championships in North Bay. We would love for Alumni to come out and join us for a ski or come cheer us on at any of the races. Brad Parsons, Head Coach 2013-2014, Sci ‘14

Athlete Spotlight – Kara Jaspers This is Kara’s first year on the Queen’s team after competing for Lakehead University for 4 years. Kara will represent Queen’s at the World University Games in Val De Fiemme, Italy as a member of the Canadian team. She is coming off a very strong year placing 6th overall and 3rd in the 10 km classic race at the 2013 CCUNC Ski Nationals. We are very excited to have Kara on the team this year as she will be an excellent role model for all of the first years and returning skiers.

The Nordic Skiing Booster Club has been actively supporting the team since 2003, and each year we aim to provide additional funding for team resources including equipment, supplies and travel allowance. The shiny new uniforms in the photos were purchased from 2010-2012 with Booster Club funding, and this year the Booster Club is purchasing the team new rollerski equipment to aid off-season training.

On behalf of the team and the Booster Club Board, we’d like to extend a big thank you to those who have donated in the past. We can’t do any of this without your continued support. Donations can be made using the form enclosed with this letter or at www.givetoqueens.ca/nordicskiing. If you would like to get involved in the Booster Club or have fundraising ideas, please contact us at [email protected].
