Coach’s Update Hi, my name is James Taylor and I am the head coach of the team this year. I am a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student that comes from considerable ski racing experience, including top 5 national level results in sprint racing. Although I am responsible for all event planning and team management, I have had considerable support from numerous senior athletes. As the team is student run, this support is crucial to a smooth operation. Last year the team had very strong results at OUAs, highlighted by a top 5 finish in the men’s relay. The team had a strong core of athletes, led by many that returned this year. Brad Parsons, last year’s coach and a varsity athlete in both nordic skiing and cycling, was named the top male student-athlete for the 201314 season. Way to go, Brad! This year instead of the traditional roller skiing fall training camp we decided to get an early jump on winter. 14 team members travelled to Forêt Montmorency, just north of Quebec City, where they had over 15 km of trails open. The weekend consisted of both classic and skate technique work as well as a fun team relay and lots of team building activities. This early season onsnow work will give us a great advantage over our competition and allowed for an easier transition once we got snow here in Ontario.

We are very excited for the race season, which includes races at the OUA invitational at Arrowhead Provincial Park, Eastern Canadian Championships in Ottawa and the OUA championships in North Bay. We would love for Alumni to come out and join us for a ski or come cheer us on at any of the races. James Taylor, Head Coach 2014-2015, BScE ‘15

Athlete Spotlight – Marie-Claire Henry This is Claire’s first year with the ski team. From Parry Sound, Claire comes from a strong racing background where she competed at the high school level and achieved top 20 OFSAA results. Claire is enthusiastic and always willing to learn how she can advance her skiing performance. Claire has been present at almost every practice this year and plans to show the benefits of this at all major races this year.

Message from the Booster Club

Marie-Claire Henry post race, Winter 2014

Thanks to all your contributions over the last decade, our Queen’s Nordic Ski Team now has twelve updated uniforms, two pairs of team rollerski equipment for dryland training, and a well-stocked wax kit, which all makes the experience of training and racing for Queen’s more effective and enjoyable. As a Booster Club, I think we can all be very proud of the legacy we are building and the opportunity we help create for Queen’s students to compete with the best in Ontario. This year, the team is hoping to increase the rollerski arsenal to four pairs and invest in a new travel wax bench for race site wax preparation. On behalf of the team and the Booster Club Board, we’d like to extend a big thank you to those who have donated in the past. We can’t do any of this without your continued support. Donations can be made using the form enclosed with this letter or at https://www.givetoqueens.ca/nordicskiing. If you would like to get involved in the Booster Club or have fundraising ideas, please contact us at [email protected]. Steven Waslander, Booster Club President and Head Coach 97/98
