CHOICE HOTELS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW BALANCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MIKE TOLBERT • FB • Junior Coastal Carolina • Douglasville, Ga.

MARIO E. BROWN • LB • Sophomore Gardner-Webb • Greenville, S.C.

Tolbert had the best game of his Coastal career in helping the Chanticleers to two Big South records and a road win at Conference foe VMI. Tolbert rushed for a career-high and team season-high 151 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries (18.9 average). He also had two catches for 32 yards to finish with 183 all-purpose yards. Tolbert first scored on a 30-yard run up the middle where he broke no fewer than four tackles. He later scampered 80 yards, outrunning the entire VMI defense, for a score and tying the Big South record for longest rush from scrimmage. Tolbert helped Coastal's running game average a Big South single-game record of 11.8 yards per rush (28 for 330), as well as set the League mark for average gain per play at 9.9 (555 total yards on 56 plays).

Brown helped Gardner-Webb hold Glenville State to just one offensive touchdown and 78 total yards in the second half while collecting 13 tackles (five solo, eight assists), a sack and two pass break-ups. Brown's effort helped GWU hold its first opponent in 14 games under 300 yards of total offense. He is averaging 19.0 tackles per game in his last two starts and now leads the Big South with 10.8 stops per game (six games).

BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT • CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK • OCT. 16, 2006 BIG SOUTH ASSURED OF FIRST-EVER NON-CONFERENCE WINNING SEASON The Big South improved its non-conference record to 18-12 this past weekend with Charleston Southern’s and Gardner-Webb’s out-of-League wins Saturday, assuring the League’s first-ever nonconference winning season in the five-year football history of the Big South. The five football members each have one non-conference game remaining, which at worst would give the League an 1817 mark. The 18 non-conference wins sets a Big South record, surpassing the previous high of 17 non-League wins in 2003 during a 12-game season. ROLL CALL The Big South Conference is enjoying a record-breaking season at the gate as well in 2006, as the five football members are averaging a combined 7,466 fans per game. The Conference has drawn a total attendance of 111,988 through 15 home dates. The League record attendance figure is 157,465 in 2004 (28 home dates), for a record average of 5,624. THIGPEN ADDED TO WALTER PAYTON AWARD LIST Coastal Carolina senior QB TYLER THIGPEN was named to the revised Walter Payton Award Watch List, The Sports Network announced on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The list consists of 16 players who are under consideration for I-AA football's version of the Heisman Trophy as the top player in I-AA football and will be presented Thursday, Dec. 14 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Thigpen is the first ever Big South Conference player on the Payton Watch List. Former Gardner-Webb DB MARIO WILLIAMS was a Buck Buchanan Award defensive player of the year candidate in 2004. CONFERENCE SEASON PICKS UP WHERE IT LEFT OFF Last season, the Big South Conference season saw seven of the 10 match-ups decided by seven points-or-less, and Coastal’s 31-27 come-from-behind win in the closing seconds at VMI this past Saturday continued the trend in the 2006 League opener. It was Coastal’s third win by four pointsor-less this season. REMAINING BIG SOUTH OPENERS ON TAP THIS WEEKEND Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb and Liberty open their respective Conference seasons this weekend. The Bucs host VMI -- the last team to defeat Charleston Southern, while Gardner-Webb visits Liberty. Charleston Southern, which is 1-3 in Big South openers, carries a three-game Conference win streak into Saturday’s game. CSU is facing VMI in its League opener for the fourthstraight year and is 1-2 vs. the Keydets in those games. Gardner-Webb is 2-2 in Big South openers and is looking to end a two-game skid in openers. Liberty also is 2-2 in League openers and is looking for its first Conference opening win since 2004. Saturday’s game will mark the third time Gardner-Webb and Liberty will face each other in their respective Conference opener, with each team winning once. BIG SOUTH CURRENTLY SPORTING TWO TOP 25 PROGRAMS For the first time in Big South history, the Conference has two teams ranked in a national top 25 poll in the same week. Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette has ranked Charleston Southern (17th) and Coastal Carolina (18th) in his Top 25 for the second consecutive week. The Chanticleers are also ranked No. 24 in the CSN Coaches and The Sports Network polls, and No. 25 by I-AA.org. Charleston Southern has received votes in the remaining three polls as well. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN EXTENDS SECOND-LONGEST WINNING STREAK IN NATION The 6-0, No. 17 Charleston Southern Buccaneers extended their win streak to 11 this past weekend, currently the second-longest winning streak in the nation, behind San Diego’s 14-game streak. CSU’s 11-game win streak also establishes the longest win streak in Big South history, breaking Coastal Carolina’s record 10-game streak from 2004-05. CSU’s six-straight wins this season is the thirdlongest in-season winning streak in League history. The Bucs have won seven-straight home games as well. PRICE BECOMES BIG SOUTH’S CAREER LEADER IN RECEPTIONS AND YARDAGE Charleston Southern junior WR MAURICE PRICE, who became the fifth player in Big South history with 100 career receptions in Week 1, is the League’s all-time leader in receptions and yardage, breaking the records this past Saturday following his 9-catch, 109-yard effort against Edward Waters. Price surpassed VMI’s ZOHN BURDEN, who held the marks of 151 catches for 1,936 yards. Price’s Big South career record totals stand at 156 receptions and 1,991 yards. HEAD RUSH Coastal Carolina senior QB TYLER THIGPEN, who became the Big South’s career rushing leader among quarterbacks at Winston-Salem State in Week 5, is currently 10th all-time on the Big South’s career rushing chart with 1,367. He needs eight yards to pass current Houston Texans RB and Liberty grad SAM GADO for ninth place (1,373).

BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT • CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK • OCT. 16, 2006 TOUGH SCHEDULE -- AND LOSSES ABig South football member faces a nationally-ranked opponent for the sixth-straight week this coming Saturday, as VMI visits No. 17 Charleston Southern. Meanwhile, of the League’s 12 non-conference losses, two have come against Division I-A programs, four were against nationally-ranked opponents, and two were against teams that eventually cracked the Top 25 (UT-Martin and Towson) nationally. Towson has since fallen out of the rankings. TOTALLY OFFENSIVE Coastal Carolina senior QB TYLER THIGPEN, who is first in I-AA in total offense with an average of 327.14 yards per game (2,290 total), is 484 total yards away from the Big South’s single-season record of 2,773, set by NICK ROBERTS in 2004. Thigpen is blazing ahead of the League’s per game mark of 265.2, set by COLLIN DRAFTS in ‘04. He has recorded six 300-plus games of total offense, a Big South single-season record, and became the third player in Big South history with 6,000 career total yards in Week 6 vs. Furman. He is now at 6,562. Below is Thigpen’s game-by-game breakdown: OPPONENT vs. Elon at Wofford at #17 Georgia Southern vs. South Carolina State at Winston-Salem State vs. #3 Furman at VMI

HE MAKES IT LOOK SO SIMP-LE Coastal Carolina junior WR JEROME SIMPSON continued his down-to-the-wire heroics this past Saturday at VMI, catching the game-winning seven-yard touchdown pass with :18 seconds remaining. Against then-No. 3 Furman, he caught the game-tying and game-winning scores in the fourth quarter in CCU’s 29-27 upset win over the Paladins. Simpson has nine touchdown receptions this year, tying his career-high and four away from tying the Big South single-season record of 13. He became the fifth player in Big South history with 1,500 career receiving yards at VMI (1,537), and is four receptions away from 100 in his career. Of his 96 career receptions, 26 have been for touchdowns -- 27.1 percent. POINT OF ORDER Coastal Carolina has scored a point in all 40 games in its history, establishing the Big South record for consecutive games with a point. Liberty held the previous record of 35-straight games with a point from the beginning of Big South football in 2002 to Week 2 of the 2005 season when it was shutout by Connecticut. Gardner-Webb has scored in each of its last 35 contests, followed by VMI (23), Charleston Southern (15) and Liberty (13). TACKLE BOX Coastal Carolina senior LB JAMAR LEATH became the Big South’s all-time leader in tackles this past weekend following his 13-tackle performance at VMI. He surpassed JUSTIN HUGGARD and TODD BALDWIN for the career lead, and current stands at 320. Meanwhile, Liberty LB MANNY ROJAS became the fifth player in Big South history with 300 career tackles this past Saturday, and sits tied for second at 308 with Huggard and Baldwin. Below are the top tacklers in Big South history: TOTAL PLAYER 320 ......JAMAR LEATH, Coastal Carolina (2003-present) 308 ......Justin Huggard, VMI (2003-05) 308 ......Todd Baldwin, VMI (2003-05) 308 ......MANNY ROJAS, Liberty (2003-present) 306 ......Keppy Baucom, Gardner-Webb (2002-05) 299 ......Mario Williams, Gardner-Webb (2002-04) JENNINGS CHALLENGING LEAGUE’S SEASON RUSHING RECORD Liberty RB RASHAD JENNINGS leads the Big South with 763 rushing yards -- which surpasses last season’s top rusher in the Conference (ANDRE COPELAND, 721) -- and is back on track to break the Big South’s single-season rushing record of 1,347, set by Liberty’s DRE BARNES in 2003. Jennings needs 585 yards to break the mark (an average of 117.0 per game over the next five games). He is currently averaging 127.2 yards per game (11th in the country), which would equal 636 over the fivegame span and on pace for 1,399. Jennings needs 237 yards to record just the fifth 1,000-yard rushing season in Big South history.

BIG SOUTH WEEKLY FOOTBALL REPORT • CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK • OCT. 16, 2006 NOBODY BEATS THE MIZ VMI redshirt-senior SEAN MIZZER continues to push towards the Big South career rushing record of 3,409, held by Liberty’s DRE BARNES. Mizzer now stands at 2,845 rushing yards in his Big South tenure (564 away from tying Barnes), and needs to average 141.0 per game over the remaining four contests to reach the mark. He is 155 yards shy of becoming the second player in Big South history with 3,000 rushing yards. Mizzer is currently averaging 92.0 yards per game, and has posted four 100-yard rushing games this season. He has 14 as a Big South member, which is second all-time to Barnes’ League record of 17, and 17 overall in his VMI career. FLAMES’ DEFENSE IS RED HOT The Liberty Flames rank first in the Big South and fourth in the country in scoring defense, holding opponents to 10.83 points per game (65 in 6 games). The Big South record for scoring defense in a season is 16.0, set by Coastal Carolina in 2004. Liberty has posted two shutouts this season, becoming just the second team in Big South history to whitewash two opponents in one campaign. GardnerWebb was the first in 2003. The Flames’ defense has limited opponents to less than 10 points in three games this year, the most since Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina did it three times in 2004. COAST TO COAST Coastal Carolina’s offense set two Big South single-game records this past Saturday at VMI. The Chanticleers rushed for 330 yards on 28 carries, setting a League mark for yards per rush at 11.79. The old record was 8.97, set by Liberty earlier this season at Savannah State (33 for 296 on Sept. 23). Coastal Carolina’s 9.91 average gain per play (555 yards on 56 plays) against the Keydets also broke the Big South single-game record of 9.65, which was established by Charleston Southern on Oct. 15, 2005 against West Virginia Wesleyan (695 yards on 72 plays). TURNING A NEGATIVE INTO A POSITIVE Charleston Southern’s defense held Edward Waters to minus-19 yards rushing Saturday, just missing the Big South record for fewest rushing yards allowed. Liberty holds the record at minus-20 vs. Kentucky Wesleyan in 2003. It marked the third time this season that the Buccaneers held an opponent to less than 100 yards rushing, and lowered CSU’s season average to 98.17 -- 12th in the nation. 10-4 GOOD BUDDY Four Big South quarterbacks have scored 10 rushing touchdowns in their careers, and Charleston Southern QB COLLIN DRAFTS is three away from tying the Big South career record in the category. Drafts is second all-time with 16 rushing touchdowns, trailing just NICK ROBERTS, who scored 19 in his career. VMI’s JONATHAN WILSON and TYLER THIGPEN are tied for third with 12 rushing scores each. COLLIN CARD Charleston Southern senior QB COLLIN DRAFTS, who became the first Big South player to surpass 8,000 career passing yards this during Week 5 against North Greenville, stands at 8,572 in his career. Drafts also became the first player in Big South history to eclipse 8,000 career total offensive yards during Week 3. Drafts recorded his fourth 300-plus game of total offense against Savannah State (363) in Week 6, his ninth career game with more than 300 total yards, extending his League record. Drafts’ Big South record total offense total stands at 9,118. TV GUIDE Following its acquisition of Turner South five months ago, Fox Cable Networks has re-launched and re-branded the network as SportSouth. The Big South has two football games scheduled on SportSouth -- the Nov. 11 Coastal Carolina at Gardner-Webb game and the Nov. 18 Charleston Southern at Coastal Carolina contest. SportSouth is abbreviated SPSO in listings and can be found where Turner South was on respective cable systems. PERK-OLATING Coastal Carolina RB AUNDRES PERKINS, who became the fourth player in Big South history to rush for 2,000 career yards in Week 4, is currently fourth all-time at 2,158 -- 57 yards away from reaching former teammate PATRICK HALL (2,214) for third-place. Perkins started the season sixth all-time on the Big South’s career rushing list. BABY BOOMER Gardner-Webb sophomore punter MICHAEL HANNA, who set a Big South single-game record with a 52.8 punting average in Week 2 against Tennessee Tech, is averaging 45.6 yards per punt this season and is challenging GRAHAM WHITLOCK’s League record of 45.5. Hanna has averaged at least 43.8 yards per punt in five of six games this season, and has booted 11 punts 50 yards-or-longer this year. He is currently second in the nation in punting.

BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL WEEKLY REPORT • CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK • OCT. 16, 2006 WHO NEEDS FEDEX WHEN THIGPEN DELIVERS IN THE AIR AND ON THE GROUND Coastal Carolina QB TYLER THIGPEN became the fastest player in Big South history to throw for 1,000 yards in a season when he passed the mark against South Carolina State in Week 4. He has 1,893 yards through seven games (270.4 per game) and is just the second Big South QB to have at least two 300-yard passing games in one season. He is 702 yards shy of breaking the League’s single-season passing record of 2,594. Meanwhile, Thigpen is fourth in the Conference with 397 rushing yards, and needs 41 yards to break his single-season record for most rushing yards by a quarterback (437). Earlier this season, he became the first QB in League history to record two 90-yard rushing games in the same year after his 91-yard effort against S.C. State in Week 4. He gained 94 at Wofford in Week 2. TURN OF THE CENTURY Gardner-Webb WR KORY ALSTON surpassed 100 career receptions Saturday vs. Glenville State, becoming the sixth player in Big South history to reach the century mark. He is sixth all-time with 103 receptions and needs seven catches to surpass GARY PRICE (109) for fifth place. FULL PRICE Charleston Southern junior WR MAURICE PRICE -- ranked No. 7 among all I-AA wide receivers by The Sports Network entering the season -- is currently first in the nation in receptions per game with 9.50. He has 57 catches through six games, which is tied for sixth-most in a Big South single-season. If he can maintain his average, he is on pace for 104.5, which would shatter the Big South single-season record of 79, set by AARON DUNKLIN in 2003. MIZ KID VMI senior RB SEAN MIZZER is tied for the career lead with 563 rushing attempts, matching DRE BARNES’ record established from 2002-04. Mizzer is second in the Big South with 644 rushing yards this year, and his 68-yard touchdown run at Army in Week 6 is tied for the ninth-longest rush from scrimmage in Big South history. He also broke loose for a 63-yard score in Week 1 vs. Davidson. HOKE’S PAT STREAK ENDS Coastal Carolina kicker JOSH HOKE saw his 85 consecutive PAT attempts end in Week 6 when Furman blocked his extra point attempt in the fourth quarter. Hoke is now 23-of-24 on the season in PAT kicks, and is the League’s all-time leader with 151 out of 157 career attempts ( =96.2). STOP, THIEF Charleston Southern has intercepted 11 passes this season to lead the Big South Conference, and has racked up 230 return yards on those pick-offs, the fourth-highest interception return yardage in a Big South single-season. LIBERTY ESTABLISHES LARGEST CROWD IN BIG SOUTH HISTORY Liberty set a school and Big South Conference attendance record this past weekend vs. William & Mary with 15,631 at Williams Stadium. This season, seven crowds have cracked the League’s top 17 largest crowds.
